Skeptic Summary #164

By The Staff
Posted on: 11/3/2007

Laws and religion, Jeffrey Dahmer of all people, Scientology, retractions, Our Lady of Revenge and more!

Week ending November 3, 2007 (Vol 4, #41)

Welcome to the Skeptic Summary, a quick week-in-review guide to the Skeptic Friends Network and the rest of the skeptical world.

Forum Highlights:
First Clause of First Amendment - Says nothing about Congress making a law despising religion.

Hovind and Dahmer sittin’ in a tree… - Hovind is playing a game of morality limbo.

Scientology sneaking into Christian churches - Xenudidit.

Editor’s Choice: Scientist retracts 1955 life-origin paper - Wake up the person next to you, this is important.
Kil’s Evil Pick:
RevengeLady.com - Want revenge? Just ask the Revenge Lady for advice. Now, don’t get me wrong. I am not actually suggesting that revenge is a good thing. But if revenge is a must, and I would advise against it, this is the site for you. Lately, and perhaps because of my dealings with a certain cable company, I have had revenge on my mind. Not that I will act on it, but it is fun to dream…

Now, I understand that this site is weighted toward women who want revenge. But there is plenty there for the male seeking revenge as well. In fact, much of the advice can be turned around, if the nature of the revenge has to do with the end of a relationship. The more general stuff anyone can use, but I don’t recommend that anyone should.

I think numbers two and three of the Revenge Lady’s rules sum it up best, even though I am not endorsing these rules:
2. Revenge is healthy. Don’t listen to those mealymouths who tell you otherwise. You’re teaching people to behave better. At the same time you’re getting icky poisonous feelings out of your system once and for all. What could be healthier?

3. Remember, Karma is a good thing. Be sure everyone gets his or hers… in this lifetime. You’re helping to bring the scales of justice back into balance and restore order to the universe.
And what could be more important than that?
SkeptiQuote:
Sure, we’re smug, self-righteous, pompous and self-
important assholes, but damn it, we’re right!
— Penn Jillette
Chat Highlights:
Sunday: There was no Sunday chat.

Wednesday: There was fairly small attendance as it was Halloween. Kil being in a dress didn’t help either. Chat mostly focused around bad jokes, a Randi video, and odd google searches. Then a short discussion on the historical origins and meanings of “Trick or Treat?” Chat ended with more about Time Warner Cable, the customer is always an idiot, and Acts of Gord.

Come chat with us.

Book of the Week:
The Counter-Creationism Handbook, by Mark Isaak.

“Those opposed to the teaching of evolution often make well-rehearsed claims about the science that sound powerful and convincing. And many people who support the teaching of evolution — students, teachers, parents, administrators — do not have the background to respond. They know that scientists have thoroughly dismantled these arguments, but they don’t have a handy way of responding to these attacks. The Counter-Creationism Handbook is a one-stop resource for addressing over 400 of the most prevalent claims made by creationists. Each claim is followed by a succinct and scientifically valid rebuttal, and the book includes print and on-line resources for further reading and information.”
