Skeptic Summary #97

By The Staff
Posted on: 6/24/2006

Bigfoot neutrality, brave integrity, spider creativity, robotic calamity, Bigfoot fatality, Scientologist insanity, website nativity and more!

Week ending June 24, 2006 (Vol 3, #24)

Welcome to the Skeptic Summary, a quick week-in-review guide to the Skeptic Friends Network and the rest of the skeptical world.

Forum Highlights:
Bigfoot exhibit at Idaho Museum will be ‘neutral’ - Is it being sponsored by Fox News?

Bravery, honor and integrity - The dispute over international law continues into its third thread.

Oldest spider web snared in amber - Spiderman files lawsuit, claims it’s a family heirloom.

Editor’s Choice: Discontinued robots allowed to self-program - But are they “Three Laws” compliant?

From the Archives Big Foot Dead… - Or is he? Some SFNers are, well, skeptical.
Kil’s Evil Pick:
Scientology’s® International President Goes Nuts! - And still more fun for us at Scientology’s expense…
New Article This Week:
A Brief History of the Skeptic Friends Network - How did the Skeptic Friends Network come to exist?
Chat Highlights:
Sunday: Flim-Flam! and other skeptic books; drinking and gambling at TAM; a recap of the SFN D.C. trip; college degrees: BS or BA; allergies in the Summer; Father’s Day; cold reading, and finally ending with time zones before it was time to leave.

Wednesday: First up on the menu for chat was Thai food. Kilbonics strikes again, Kil got four letters wrong in a three-letter word. I don’t know about everyone else, but I was quite impressed. Libertarian party, and how insane those crazy psycho lunatic nuts really are. This of course leads into talk of the Critical Thought Party. Hard to run on a platform of banning homeopathy. The history of the SFN, a topic which should hopefully be history once the article comes out. The conversation soon turned into article stats and which of Kil’s articles were the best (or sucked the least, depending on how you look at it).

Come chat with us.

Book of the Week:
What Is This Thing Called Science: an Assessment of the Nature and Status of Science and Its Methods, by Alan Chalmers.

“In this academic bestseller — indeed, one of the most widely read books ever written in the history and philosophy of science — Alan Chalmers provides a refreshingly lucid introduction to the philosophy of science in the twentieth century.”

— Ronald L. Numbers, University of Wisconsin, Madison
