Week ending February 24, 2007 (Vol 4, #8) Welcome to the Skeptic Summary, a quick week-in-review guide to the Skeptic Friends Network and the rest of the skeptical world.
Forum Highlights:Chimps hunting with spears — WOW, just WOW! — Just another sign that the end is near.
ID will showcase evidence — Or at least make fifty-five bucks a head railing against evolution.
Editor’s Choice: Neon industry’s new hard-sell campaign - I just get the chuckles every time I see this one.
From the Archives: It makes sense — Coberst presents a philosophy that, well, doesn’t make sense. Kil’s Evil Pick:The Proceedings of the Athanasius Kircher Society — I don’t remember if I sent you here before, but that doesn’t really matter. Time to visit again. Click on to everything you can… This Week’s Poll:The Politics Folder Chat Highlights:Sunday: New Bad Moon Rising; computer troubleshooting advice; bad stories; ventilation problems still not resolved; everyone needs caffeine; seeing the beginning of the Year of the Pig; drooling over celebrity women; politics, socialistic or capitalist? President Chavez; Jan Guillou; Siberia’s computer science project.
Wednesday: Dave came up with a new poll and posted it, so this time he should get the blame. We will probably be discussing new poll ideas every week, so don’t be surprised if the polls are changed during chat sessions. You don’t have to be an administrator to be part of the poll idea process! (Of course, administrators present will have the last word about any poll.) And that’s just another one of the hundreds of reasons to join us in chat! We also had a chat Guest. That was how he logged in. Nice guy too. We tried to hire him as an assassin, but our price was too low. Plus he would have had to drive for over an hour to do it. So that was out. Anyhow, a fabulous time was had by all, and I still have the marks to prove it…

“Chances are, you’ve heard about crop circles, ESP, aliens, and strange monsters, and you’ve probably wondered if the stories were just too far-out to be true. Lots of kids think it’s fun to watch or read about these unusual claims, but should you believe in them? How do you know that the person you called on the ‘psychic hotline’ is really a psychic, and not just someone interested in taking your money? Are the headlines in the supermarket tabloids for real, or are they just sensational stories someone made up to sell magazines? Can you tell the difference between the weird but true and the just plain weird? In Sasquatches from Outer Space, you’ll learn how to get to the bottom of these strange and fantastic claims using critical-thinking skills. You’ll explore many of the mysteries that capture so much attention and have fun while learning how scientists determine fact from fiction.
So, if you want to know the truth about the Loch Ness Monster, the Bermuda Triangle, aliens, crop circles, and lots more odd claims, this book is better than any Ouija board or fortune-teller.”
