More on Crown Books

It's hard to believe what you can put in an advertisement these days.
|
I was reading the Sunday paper today when I came across an advertisement for Crown Books. To lure people in they are offering 40% off on a book called The Day After Roswell. The ad reads as follows:The truth about the downed extraterrestrial spacecraft is finally revealed as Ret. Colonel Phillip J. Corso relates one of the governments most guarded secrets, a landmark exposé firmly grounded in fact. There is also a 25% discount on a book called Scientology: A New Slant On Life. They go on to say:A milestone on your journey to spiritual knowledge, this book — from Dianetics author L. Ron Hubbard — provides real life answers where other books only pose more questions. Now, I couldn’t care less what books appear in ads for Crown Books. What bothers me is that there is no disclaimer. I am lead to believe that Crown accepts the claimed truth of these books. It could be that the owner of Crown really believes this crap. Or it just may be, after extensive marketing research, they have found that presenting books with dubious claims to a credulous clientele sell better when offered as absolute fact, un-mucked by a disclaimer. In any case, I think I will now take it upon myself to do a Crown Books watch as a regular part of the Kil Report.
