This is a book that someone put online at:
http://home.att.net/%7Ejehdjh/kidlit1.html, called "The Sight of Hell" by Father John Furniss. This book had the explicit endorsement of the Catholic Church. With fear-mongering like this going on, it's a wonder that we ever were brave enough to crawl out of the dark ages!
Some of this is the residual fear that Skeptics have to try to overcome in people influenced by the Religious Right.

This was written specifically to scare kids out of hell. Too bad the Catholic Priests of today haven't read it, maybe it would have "helped" them.

As I've remarked before, a religious education is one of the greatest threats to one's eventual mental stability. My experience in Baptist grade school shows that very little progress has been made.

I remember that at least once a week, my "educators" would take us to chapel to soak up the insipid rantings of some buzz-cut Billy Bob whose sole mission in life is to save souls. This meant lots of shouting and graphic descriptions of the horrors of hell. (They even showed us movies about hell occaisionally).

Of course, this scared the piss out of us kids, and many of us got "saved" every week (just in case it didn't "take" the previous week). Which brings up the question: These creeps love to quantify their success as "soul savers," and would always brag about how many they had brought to Jesus. Does "saving" someone who is already "saved" count?

Not surprisingly, those who have been brought up this way usually become either total sheep or jaded non-believers.

"My best advice to anyone who wants to raise a happy, mentally healthy child is: KEEP HIM OR HER AS FAR AWAY FROM A CHURCH AS YOU CAN. Children are naive--they trust everyone. School is bad enough, but, if you put a child anywhere in the vicinity of a church, you're asking for trouble." --FZ

This just reminds me of a quote by Ferdinand Magellan:

"The Church says that the Earth is flat, but I know that it is round. For I have seen the shadow on the moon and I have more faith in the Shadow than in the Church."

Are you sure that this quote is genuine?

I doubt that in Maggelan's time there still was a widespread believe in a flat earth.

*shakes his head*

Makes me glad I left the Mormon church...they don't teach anything like this there, though, and aren't quite as bad, though the missionaries do get annoying.
