Well, I think the folks who were taking you to task are completely wrong. This Nathan Gant fellow freely posts his full name and PO Box on the internet, accessible by public search engines. And when he posts on another part of the internet using an obviously shortened version of his name, it's somehow inappropriate or a violation of "ettiquite" if you point out that these two names, found on the very same internet, are likely the same person? Absurd.
I'm getting weary of people making up rules about how internet privacy should operate, especially in the absence of precautions taken by the person allegedly desiring privacy. For fuck's sake, if you don't want anyone to know who you are, don't have personal web pages, don't make any news, and don't post on message boards using your real name!

Thanks, I needed that. I know that I probably went a bit too far for Phil's board, but I couldn't believe the reaction.
I applaud Phil for sticking to his standards though. He's a great guy and I think he's doing a fantastic job. I don't post there as often as I used to before the new format, but I heartily recommend it to everyone I know.

Not just likely. He actually admitted that I was correct in my findings. He was almost bragging about it.

I'm actually not concerned too much, but I just wondered what you folks think of the whole ‘anonymity' issue.
Ok, if you want to know what I think, The Bad Astronomer was very diplomatic and all of what he said (and also below) is correct.
2) This is the web. You have no privacy here. That's just a fact, and I state it as such with no personal opinion involved. If someone wants to look up someone else on the web, they can do it if they want. Posting some connection here is a moral grey area. I would prefer that discussions be based on the merits of the topic, and not what else the person believes.

Have I ever mentioned my severe dislike of people who bring up the Challenger explosion as part of their pet NASA conspiracy theory. That's one I've looked into intensively. As a result of Challenger NASA has to have a separate Safety Division, which they didn't prior to 86.

One might think if NASA, or any organization for that matter, wanted to keep someone quiet, they could come up with a neater way than blowing up a multi-billion dollar space vehicle on national TV.
