I have a question for all those who care to indulge me... Should an atheist who is in a workplace environment, be told by his superiors that he can not use the phrases such as ... "god damn", "fuck your god", or any other diety demeaning words? However at the same time that same atheist is subjected to listning to his peers and supervisors "Thank god" for this and that all day, or say "By the grace of god....."!

I say to each their own opinion and they should be allowed to say what they think... both sides!! I am very anti-censorship! Unlike my "god fearing" co workers! So what do you think? Should I be kept silent while they remain free to make their remarks?

Such is the nature of capitalism. Yes, those that are in charge can ask you be polite. That's all it is. "Fuck your god" is not a polite response. Why that is any less polite than "God bless you," I don't know. It is just as insane.

If someone says 'god bless you' or mentions god in other ways, why not instead of taking the attitude that you are not going to take that shit, say politly, 'there is no god but think you for your concern'. What can they say to that? Can you get in trouble for being polite while you state your opinion in a positive way? Rather than, fuck your god, which puts people on the defensive.
Something about catching more flies with honey than vinegar!
As an after thought, why not give people the impression that nonbelievers are nice instead of nasty and belligerent.

Robert

Is this in reaction to the praying in formation?

Ok, first let me clarify... I never said "fuck your god"... it was just one of the things I was told to not say,.. before I actually got a chance to use it! Second.. I said to someone "Fuck the Chaplin"... it was someone else who over heard me, who filed the complaint! Also, Everyone here knows Im an atheist and they like to use the "god" phrase to piss me off... which I take as all in good fun. They make a remark... I make a remark, but I dont go file a complaint after they say something back!!

Now.. to Trish,.. No, its a completly seperate issue from the prayer in formations,.. which despite what my SCO told me, has seemed to stop! However we have another formation of that kind tommarow, so I will see then if it really has. Also Trish, let me say Thank You for always taking an interest in my problems/issues, it is much appreciated!

With that said..... SNAKE... did you just call me nasty and belligerent? HAHAHA!!! I am a lot of things, many of them considered bad, but nasty and/or belligerent is not one of them! I simply try to make my points as clear as I can and with as much "force" as I can! Do me and us all a favor, and not open your mouth without knowing who you are talking to!! Thanx

I don't think that Snake was the only one that assumed that "fuck your god" was said in anger by you, which would qualify in some circles as being belligerent, along with telling people not to open their mouths.

Also, I don't think anyone was picking on you for saying those things. She was not saying that you were nasty and belligerent, she was saying that certain terms might give other people ammunition for thinking that atheists are nasty and belligerent.

Please excuse me for the misunderstanding, but if there is a misunderstanding, sometimes it is wise to assume that misunderstandings may not be all one-sided. I don't know Snake well, but I know Snake well enough to know that Snake was not attacking you.

Well, I do tend to be pretty defensive, sometimes without much reason. Seems to make my aggresive tendencies that much worse.

I do too. Anger is a habit that I am learning to deal with. Anger has little to do with reality. That's why I used the word "insanity." That, along with "irrational" are terms that I sometimes use that I don't explain very well when I use them.

The gentleman I worked with said "God Bless You" once when I sneezed. I asked him, "Can you really tell Him to do that?" He didn't like that.

The kids that I grew up with and I were very good at sarcasm and insults. I'm learning not to be so quick on the defensive and so quick on the insults, but old habits die hard. I'm not sure where to draw the line, but Snake is right. Sometimes, and maybe only sometimes, honey does work better than vinegar. I don't always know, and I don't think you should be condemned to death for not always being sure what's best.

Actually I didn't BUT if that's the way you want to take it.....Go for it! I can see you are looking for a fight and possibly are the type who might 'fly off the handle' without thinking things through. I don't have time to argue with people who don't listen.

Sir, you are a genius. Apparently, you do know me better than you think. Right on.
Thank you.

Oh, ok. I see you guys are working it out.

Forgot to add, I too have anger problems. My family says one of these days I'm going to get shot on the freeway because I give the 'finger' to everyone. I can understand when someone does something to piss you off and wanting to punch them or whatever. Remember it's always easier to give advice than follow it yourself.

How about you invoke another god?
"Vishnu bless you!""By the grace of Ra!" or something like that?

To say that water is wet, is not saying that there is anything wrong with water. It is saying that such is the nature of water.

Now, if you want to get into what is wrong with what we call capitalism, that might be another thread.

Perhaps that would be a good idea to start another folder about capitalism. Oh Boy!!

But if I might rephrase the question, what is wrong with any individual having a lot of money that he works for and doesn't want the government to take away to give to others who don't?
