Just in case anyone cares to sign a petition to the Nigerian government to stop the stoning of Amina Lawal, a 30 year old woman charged with adultury punishable by death.
Here is the link to the petition http://www.amnestyusa.org/oprah/index.html
Amina Lawal, a 30 year-old Muslim woman, was sentenced to stoning to death by a Shari'ah court at Bakori in Katsina State in northern Nigeria. Amina allegedly confessed to having had a child while divorced. Pregnancy outside of marriage constitutes sufficient evidence for a woman to be convicted of adultery according to the new Shari'ah-based penal code for Muslims, introduced in Katsina State.

While you can make yourself feel better by signing a petition to the Nigerian gouvernment to stop this baberism, It won't actually help the woman.
Bringing pressure on the Nigerian gouvernment is not going to help. The Nigerian Gouvernment is against this, they really would like to stop the execution if it was possible to do so without starting a civil-war.
Do some reading on the issue. There is plenty of information on the web on this issue. You will find that there are no really simple soultions for this.

Perhaps we could all then ask Amnesty International to have this on line petition removed from their web site as it serves absolutely no purpose at all. Maybe just like myself, they have no clue that this petition is useless. Maybe if they did some reading on this issue they could be better equipped to help this lady.
I was not aware that Amnesty International was such a Micky Mouse outfit.

What Oprah is asking A.I. to do is to get Nigeria to over turn it's Islamic laws and enter the 21st Century...which sounds pretty good to me.
However the prime reason that we are hated by Islam is that we don't follow their laws, that we have no morals and have a depraved society where adulteress', with their faces and belly buttons uncovered, and adulterers fornicate their souls away in public. Why would Islam listen to Oprah--who parades her own adulteress affair with an unmarried man in the pages of her own magazine for Allah and all the world to see? Oprah who never wears a veil even though she is seen by men around the world.
Nah, a form E-mail is too pathetic for words. The problem is "culture deep."

If I only did that which I thought would get immediate results I'd have died a long time ago.
There is no policy that I and my Congressional representative and Senators agree on but I write them knowing that I may slow them down a little.
Write the letters. Let them at least know that someone else is watching and that someone else thinks the issue is important.
They may not care or they may not be able to do anything about it, but the cost of a letter is worth taking the chance that it will make some difference in some person's life.

to rickm:
Amnesty International normally ain't such a mickey mouse outfit. I tend to think that the blame for this idiocy lies more with Oprah and associated publicity seeking zealots in search of a cause.
The problem here is that Nigeria in not a muslim country, does not have a muslim president and does not have the shaira as law on a natinal level. It is the muslim south where the shaira is law on a federal level. The central gouvernment would really like to change that with all the international pressure and all but they don't really have the power to do so.
It is unlikely that this and other similar petitions will change anything about the situation other than further weakening the position of the Nigerian president. The People this petition will reach are already convinced, that it would be a good idea to free Amina, a pity that they don't have the power to do so... But what the hell, at least you had your five minutes of justfied moral outrage and the comforting feeling, that you have done something about it.
