Has anyone noticed an increase in massive death tolls lately?

Actually, I have noticed quite the opposite. Check out a history book and you will see that the greatest losses of life occurred 50 or 100 years ago and the losses were much greater than anything we've seen recently. Take the Black Death for instance, or Krakatoa or tsunamis of past centuries. The dinosaur die offs beat them all, though. So what data points to an increase? All I see is that things are better than ever.

Would you mind qualifying that question, Fungus? How recently? What exactly do you mean by "massive death tolls?"

Yes Fungus I think I do know what u mean... IF you are refering to things such as WTC, the ferry that sunk and killed 700, the theater that was held hostage and over 100 died in its liberation, and things of that sort! Those type of incidents do seem to be on the rise, but as @tomic said, it is still nothing compared to the days of old, when incidents such as these were almost a daily news story!

This may be due to the fact that Jason Vorhees just won't stay dead... |

It gets cleared up in "Friday the 13th part XLI: Jason Stalks and Kills Himself". It would end a lot sooner if the teenagers in those movies would just stop having sex.
On a different note, I once tried to keep a running body count for Death Wish VI. I got up to 14 and two teeth before Bronson opened up on a crowd with a BAR. I gave up after that.

I would also like to know what you mean by "massive death tolls". Massive death tolls due to plane crashes, natural disasters, community crime?
I haven't noticed any massive death tolls lately, but I'll be on the lookout. One of the Planet X people was talking about the massive increase in volcanic activity. I'm still waiting for data on this! |

Yes, and what about the Titanic, the Chicago fire, the London fire, the American Civil War, yellow fever epidemics. When have there not been great death tolls throughout history? Oh, whoops. Got carried away. Sorry. To answer your question, no. |

Snake, this is just one of those casual remarks that is supposed to make us consider changing our ways 'cause the end is a comin'! Although, it's not an uncommon thing for the young to say after a big disaster. The problem there is that they are looking at history from an especially narrow perspective in terms of years. I think I thought at one time in my youth and to this day feel really silly about it. But if you've seen one earthquake, to you it is the biggest damn disaster ever.

And you completely glossed over the influenza outbreak of 1917-1918. Union Carbide.
I agree there is no lack of death in groupings such as disease, war, accidents involving mass transit, engineering gaffes, natural disasters, etc. And have been in recorded history. |

BUT...consider this. Most people from the present are still alive while EVERYBODY from the past is dead as a door nail. |

The perception that things like disasters are getting worse, with more apparent crime etc, are surely down to news being much more easily diseminated through the media. A few years ago, much of the disasters we see today would not be reported at home and therefore not generally known about. I guess its a case of the more we know the more worry about it. |

One other point: there are simply a lot more people around these days so more mortality is inevitable. Also, we have so much more sophisticated technology to kill each other with these days. |

More dead people? Counterside is true: In the flood catastrophy in eastern germany, only 10 or so people died. This is incredibly low for such an event that made the city of Dresden look like 1945. In the latest eruptions of the etna volcano, noone died yet.
Thus, at least natural catastrophies don't kill as many people as before anymore. Not even tornados and earth quakes. |
