I suppose by now almost everyone has seen one of those Fox specials about how man has never been to the moon. I'm just wondering what peoples opinions on that are.

Personally I think it sounds very tabloidesque, what possible advantage would the U.S. gain from faking a trip to the moon? And furthermore, what possible advantage could be had from making people believe that we haven't been to the moon?

That 33 years ago it would result in great propaganda.
Anyways, the theory I like best: The U.S.-astronauts were on moon, but picture quality was that terribly bad that they made a fake in a studio in Hollywood (or somewhere else).

It is, of course, a pile fo crap. But then, much of what Fox puts forth falls into this catagory, it seems. They also have done a whole, big bunch of hogwash on Noah's ridiculous flotation device.

It might be fun to watch though, as long as it's regarded as entertainment, not a documentary (actually, it is a documentary. It's aimed at the gullible, in their millions).

They aired it here the second time this weekend, and I saw it for the first time then.
When I was watching it my time was split between laughing out lound and shaking my fist at those idiots!
Well I shouldn't call them idiots, the "drastically misinformed ignoramus'" would be a better term.

Then again, I have never visited the FOX network. I do not have cable and watch one-half hour of news (if at all) on network channels. I hate to spend real money (down the drain) for something that I would never find the time (nor the interest) to use. I am simply an old-fashioned nerd (nerdess?) who does not care for public taste. I shall do my own stupid taste, thank you!

Well, if you really wanna know-

The whole thing was in fact a hoax. However, due to technical difficulties with the set, the films and pictures had to be made on location on the moon.

You mean that JFK was a good guy?
I thought he was the one behind all of this, and the fighters for freedom had to have him assasinated so he wouldn't sell the US to the aliens.

actually, I didn't think that, it just sounded cool...

I can use that? I don't know if it's the lessened about of sunlight we get here this time of year or what, but I've been running into a lot of real nutballs lately.
Now I don't mind pointing out a few facts to someone's who's merely confused by certain *cough* media "documentaries".
But then you run into the others. If you try to explain inertia, you're labled as a NASA/govt/CIA/FBI/Whatever stooge.

You know, we actually have photos, taken on Earth through telescopes, of the Apollo lunar module.

If we didn't land on the moon...how did that get there?

I'm sure Phil knows for sure, but I believe this is an urban myth. I found this on a "Lunar Trivia" site: The Hubble Space Telescope can resolve features on the lunar surface down to 85 metres (280 feet) across although that seems like an awfully poor resolution.

Hey Phil, you lurking?

I just read that soon the VLT will be targeted towards the landing sites and will finally prove that we were there.

I'm sure the theorists will just say that NASA pasted cutouts of the lander onto the front of the telescope.

PhDreamer, yes, until only recently, that was only a myth. I've seen a photo in Sky & Telescope magazine showing what they said was the lunar module. It just looked like a small black dot, but apparently they know that was it.

Oops, I was wrong, it still is an urban myth.

The photo I saw was taken from orbit by Apollo 17. Still pretty good evidence if you ask me.
