Aristotle said it very well when he pointed out that "It is the mark of an educated man to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." |

I find the entertainment of today (in the USA) very un-entertaining. Haven't been to a movie in years. Paid, that is. I have to admit I've seen one or two previews of contemporary movies the rest of todays films were seen either on planes or on TV. The acting is horrid the scripts terrible. Save a small number of classy movies by the very few talented people left. I don't get how certain so called 'movie stars' are so famous when they are as ulgy as they can't act. And the music! Where is the music? All we have now is rap crap and elevator music for pop culture. Isn't there anyone now who has an eye or ear for real art? |

Don't feel bad Ntech. I've been an atheist all my life and grew up with a bunch of Jews. So I guess that's two strikes against me but I also like Christmas. Decorate alot, just not the religious stuff. I also love Halloween and really decorate even more, so I guess in some eyes I'm a heathen for that. Ya can't win! Why try? |

Coming in kind of late here, but...personally, I'm all for shit like Star Trek, Star Wars (even if I don't like it), LOTR, Harry Potter, etc., etc., etc., because I think we need myths and legends. I don't believe in Heracles or Harry Potter or Bilbo anymore than I do the Tooth Fairy, but I do maintain that fictions of this sort are important, that they are character building, that they offer an ideal that wouldn't necessarily be bad to strive for. Fiction doesn't always have to be mindless distraction. I know it's popular to seek only that these days, but that's not its most noble purpose.
The fantasy genre of literature and film offers everything good about religion without all the bullshit. |
