Back in the days of CyberAntiquity, (5 or 6 years ago), I was a member of the Computer Society of the IEEE (--pronounced "eye-triple-ee" or, if you have an Electrical Engineer friend who you want to poke fun at, "eye-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee" where "ee" sounds as in "EEK!").
I needed to send an E-mail and so went to the local public library to use their web-connection. Didn't know what I was doing so reference librarian tried to help me set up a mail box at the IEEE Computer Society: "YourHandle@Computer.org".
She failed but suggested a E-mail box at "HotMail.com" then quickly left, throwing me to the CyberWolves.
The set up program asked some kind of arcane question that I didn't understand and I answered with the Computer Society's address "Computer.org". That was rejected (only letters, numbers, and underlines allowed) so I ended up answering "Computer_org" which led to the very, very odd E-mail address "Computer_org@Hotbox.com".
Thus it was that my CyberName became Computer Org.
But who cares?
What's in a name? Nothing.

There really isn't anything behind my name. Its just the first thing that popped into my head when I was registering here, and now I use it on the JREF forum too. Don't ask why I spelled "Legallee" wrong, there is no special reason. But I am slightly insane so I guess there could be something behind my name, but not much. |

LOL. Cute story, thanks for the laugh.
(did you mean for each of us to tell why or how we choose our name?) What can I say, among the many reasons, I like snakes. That name is always taken on all the other sites, you'd of had to be in right at the beggining to get it. In fact, from my AOL address, you can see I had to take a modified version. Soooooo, when I got here, as one of the 1st, I was happy to finally be able to get it before anyone else. Na, na, na.....to anyone who wanted it. |

BTW, is being insane a Canadian thing? My mother was from Canada and she kept telling me I'm crazy. But you should see her side of the family! Anybody would be, growing up with them. |

The name I use with on-line forums? As you can see, I just have no imagination. Lisa |

I was signing on to aol on my own account for the first time (I had used another handle on my dad's before). All the mythological names I liked were taken: Amergin, MacCumhaill, Orpheus, Aristaeus, Loki, Coyote, etc. The program recommended that I try putting a number after my name, and at that point I remembered an article I had read about Boron-Neutron Capture Therapy. Thus began the name of myself. I found out recently that some other schmuck took Boron10@yahoo.com, and Boron10@hotmail.com. I started receiving spam from these pricks! So, I had to pick a different name on yahoo. Any guesses? Ah, never mind: it's SkepticFriend. All I could come up with on short notice, eh? |

Hmmm, I chose Slater because my family was on the losing side of the revolt against the English in 1698 and we were forced to change O'Slattery to something more Anglo sounding. |

Just got back from there this summer. It's pretty nice... you know if you like the idea of cramming the entire US's population into a country the size of California. It was cool though.
My name...well I think I am in the same boat as Lisa.
Back in the days of local BBS's (if anyone still remembers those.) I called myself Skajaquada. The reason being was that I looked down at my desk and saw a song title that was "Flight of the Skajaquada" and I figured, hey....no one else will ever use it. So it stuck. I was pretty niave too. My first password was "flight." |

Where I live we like to think of LA like that. Only it's our state's population in one city.

Well, actually, I wasn't doing much of anything. I expected no replies and few reads.
On the other hand, I posted a piece over in Astronomy about Mirror Matter that purely CRIES OUT for vast quantities of skeptical critique----even more than space-aliens at Roswell. It got few reads and no replies. (As we used to say in the Army: "WTF?, over." ) |

Well, I suppose that's one way to look at LA, as long as you don't forget that LA is about as big as your state.... |

Hey, I popped in, but I have sort of screwed up eyesight, and the background in that forum makes it hard for me to read. I could have copied, cut and pasted into Word, but I have sort of screwed up patience sometimes, (you may call it laziness).
But, I did enjoy your handle story, if that's any consolation.
And, I too must agree with Lisa. Mine ain't too awfully creative. Actually, I was using Piltdown online back then, but Piltdown beat me too it. I tried to come up with something new, extraordinary and amazingly creative, but after about 4 seconds of intense thought I gave up. |
