Just wanted to start this post by saying hey all. I went back home for the holidays, didn't really have a chance to post any. So I hope everybody is doing good.

Ok so I was home I saw the new Scorcesi (spelling?) flick, Gangs of New York. I got to say I was kinda impressed. The movie was great. Even DiCaprio (spelling?), who I normally dismiss because of his pop-status did ecceptionally well.

I tell you what though. My favorite actor in the movie had to be the guy who played Bill (the bad guy.) The man was incredible. He took me from hating him in the beginning, to almost liking him in the middle to somewhat of a mix between hate and respect in the end.

The movie is set in mid 1800s New York, the year the riots broke out against the draft. The movie has obvious political undertones.

But since I am no thoelogy expert I really think I missed much of the religeous undertones. The major players in the movie are the roman catholics and prodestants. I think it very interesting how they were protrayed in the movie.

One example (without giving too much away) is when 3 different groups of people are praying. Scorcesi cycles through them and relates the differences in what they are saying. One god is a god of retribution, one is merciful, and the other I can't remmeber at this time.

All in all it was a great movie and I give it the Terry Thumbs Up. (a very coveted award I might add.)

I urge you guys to see this one and tell me what you think. Oh and fair warning, there is a good amount of violence, so bringing the whole family is up to you.

[edited for spelling]

Hi Terry!
I'm a new member, and I just came across your post about "Gangs", and I must say that my reaction to the movie was very similar to your's. The praying scenes drive home the idea that the god concept can be used to justify whatever one wishes to do. Anyone who says God is on their side is dangerous as hell!

The more I think about it, Gangs of New York may be as close to perfect as any movie got in 2002. I would put The Hours up there with it, but I loved the book so much more that it's hard for me to compliment the movie. Adaptation, also, was very good. 2002 didn't altogether suck, moviewise.

As for Walt's comment: I didn't really view the prayer sequence as having much to do with prayer or religion or God. What I found most interesting is the God that each group prayed to. The poor prayed to the cruel, Old Testament God while the rich felt more in line with the New Testament, nice God. It illustrates the different lives that were being led, that were bouncing against each other during this time of conflict and growth.
