Durning the Amaz!ng Meet!ng in Ft. Lauderdale, I got to visit an Observatory/Planetarium for the first time! Way too cool. The show was excellent. It concerned early developments in navigation. I was sitting in the smart aleck/nutball section next to Phil Plait. So the show was both interesting and fun.
The college staff had also set up a bunch of telescopes for viewing. It was fun to see some of the folks using a scope for the first time. Remember the first time you saw the rings of Saturn or Jupiter's moons? Lots of people got to have a real "WOW!" moment.
The staff at the college was awesome. They hung around pretty late just so a bunch of skepgeeks from a conference could have a field trip. It made for a late night, but everyone had a blast.
So now I'm hooked. There isn't a Planetarium in my neck of the woods, but you can bet I'll be on the lookout when I'm traveling.

Lisa, You'll have to drop by CO. They do that occasionally out at CU Boulder.

Cool. What were the scopes like? Schmidt-Cassegrains? Portable Dobsonians? Small refractors? Equatorial mounts? 8 inches? 10 inches?

Generally, at an observatory, the telescope is mounted in a dome. Usually much larger than 8-12 inch telescopes sold for backyard stargazing. Even so, all I use for my own purposes is a little 4.5 reflector.

(One of these years I'll finally learn to type.)
