Fred Rogers passed away today from stomach cancer. He'll be missed.

Well, without being too disrespectful, not by me he wont.
I take it he was American?
I think U.S. people ought to understand that there is a world outside the States, and not every semi famous American is a world wide treasure.

I'm sorry, but I thought this site was about sceptiscm, and I wondered what a post about the death of someone most of the world hadn't heard of had to do with anything.
Should we staert posting links about deaths of moderately famous people from all over the world? I suspect the boards would be choccer before you know it.
Mind you, your reaction to someone saying "I'm not interested in the death of a minor US celebrity" was so typically American.... but really, we're not intersted.
Look, I'll say it again. I and most of the non US population have never heard of Mr Rogers, and what place an obituary to him has on this site beats me. Was he a sceptic?
and lets put some perspective on this as well...
Whats really disgusting and disrespectful is American arrogance over the need for a war. Innocent people will die. Thats disgusting and disrespectful, not someone saying they dont care about an obituary for Mr Rogers. I'm sure he was a lovely man.

Your problem is that you actually see some sort of "American arrogance" in a simple post about the passing of the host of a kid's show.
Your bigotry and prejudice against people that just happened to be born in the United States is as bad as the bigotry and prejudice of a KKK member.
Not all USians are arrogant, but you certainly seem to have no problem with small-minded and ignorant generalizations about us.
Take your war talk to the Politics folder.

I apologise for seeming small minded and ignorant to you, and for daring to show a lack of interest and respect in the obituary of the host of an American kids show who is unknown to me (and I suspect most non Americans) and who has nothing to do with sceptiscm at all.
Now I've been put in my place , and leart my lesson, I insist that whenever any US celebrity dies, no matter how minor, that you place a link to an orbituary so we can all pass our respects to those Americans that we havent heard of , but should have done.
God bless America and all its citizens, and god bless and forgive all of the rest of us for sometimes failing to show the neccesary respect to you.

You are under no obligation to reply to any post, especially those that you don't consider skeptical enough. Valiant's post carried no air of Americo-centrist superiority nor did it indicate who should be missing the gentleman in question. I don't understand the point you were trying to make, but you certainly did come off as needlessly hostile.

You completely and totally missed the point. I couldn't care less about whether or not you care about Mr. Roger's death, or whether you've ever heard of him. I never cared much for the guy myself, except as the subject of a parody or joke.
The fact is that you have shown that you have contempt for the "typical American". There are plenty of US-centric, arrogant, ignorant Americans. But to assume this is typical is itself a contemptable mindset to hold.
Anyone who holds contempt for the "typical" <insert large ethnicity/group/citizenship> is being both ignorant and offensive.
How would you react to someone saying the following:
"The welfare mom was an unmarried drug-using black woman. How typical."
I'll reply in a new thread in Social Issues if [anyone shows a desire to continue]. |

Your example about the black woman was fair, and I see your point about my generalising and this time, I do sincerely apologise for these generalisations.
I can see that my posts have sort of stereotyped all you Americans as arrogant and selfishly full of themselves and their culture as if its the only thing in the World thats important.
I can see how this might have offended.
Tokyo, I'd be happy if you accepted my apologies, but I'd be intersted to know your views on whether Americans are aware of a growing Anti American feeling amongst a lot of people from a lot of different parts of the World. Do you think America deserves this.
I'd be happy to take this discussion elsewhere too if you wish.

Yes I think the U.S. society is becoming more aware, because it's an issue in the press. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how much the average citizen cares. We're pretty isolated, relatively speaking.
