On June 28, 1914, an Archduke was assassinated.
One month later, July 28, the A-H Empire reacted by declaring War on tiny Serbia---with the prearranged suport of Germany.
World War I (aka: "the Great War"; the "War to end all Wars"; etc.), with its estimated 10 million killed, had started.
What more needs be said?
(Edited {in brown} to highlight the relative scale of things.)

Better find a bed you can hide under if you are so frightened. |

As it turns out, I am not even the least bit frightened. However....if I lived in San Francisco.... |

As I understand things, there were a bunch of little nation-states in the area of present-day Bosnia, Serbia, et al. They were squabbling. The then-very large and powerful Austrian-Hungarian Empire had designs on the region. On the side, the various nation-states (some small; some of them "empires") were pairing off.
The assassination of the Archduke was like the seeding of supercooled glass: All of a sudden there were two sides with nearly every European Nation-State involved.
It happened very quickly; it was very bad; and, most importantly, there was no getting out of it. |
