Looking for a movie review? Want to know it the movie might interest you? Have a look at this link:

ChildCare Action Project:
Christian Analysis of American Culture (CAP)

This site reviews movies based on how appropriate they are for children to watch. The list of reviews is extensive. Their WISDOM score gives us an idea what the movie is like, and each review also has a couple of examples of unacceptable behaviour from the movie.

101 Dalmations: "Gross examination of dog to determine its gender"
101 Dalmations: "Electrification of private parts"
Chicken Run: "suggestive eye movement"
Entrapment: "sensual movements in skin-tight pants" <-- main reason for me to watch the movie in the first place... Ok, I find Catherine Zetha-Jones attractive...so what?
Galaxy Quest: "monstrous alien with evil intent"
Miss Congeniality: "homosexual mannerisms and comments"

This one I don't understand...
Moulin Rouge: "assault to protect the attempted rape victim"
If you see someone being raped, it's un-christian to try to protect the person about to be raped?

Ok, so what's so funny about this site?
Well several things:
The absurdity of the mindset of the people writing their reviews.
How faint of heart they are. (Read the review of "8mm" )
Reading the review for "Scary Movie" made me decide I just HAD TO SEE that movie. Just like "Dogma".
Sometimes the point of the movie gets lost on them... Like in The Sixth Sense: "developing adultery". Those of you who have seen The Sixth Sense know what I'm talking about. The rest of you: GO AND RENT IT! It's a great movie!

Oh Gee, let's just make all movies yippy skippy with no bad guy, no plot, no reason to see them????

And movies based on the reality of a situation, let's candy coat it so it doesn't look/sound/taste so bad.

It looked like some of them were good reviews of plot lines, but the inability to accept that something based in reality should bear some resemblance to reality boggles the mind.

The only movie (to my knowledge) that scored 100 on the Wisdom-scale was Mary Poppins. Even though it had one instance of black magic: Levitation.

quote:
Jimmy is a rap artist. And he is white in a predominantly black area of art. Competition is severe but he is going to make it one way or another. With rap being born on the streets, Rabbit's life as a street urchin should serve him well. And a street urchin he was. All his life in the big city where the only grass was smoked. Yes, there is illegal drug possession and consumption and drug intoxication in this movie. His life has been spent on the poor side of 8 Mile, a boundary between rich and poor demography.

Jimmy's first attempt to audition for glory as a rap artist happens at the Shelter which appears to be an abandoned building sparsely renovated to permit stage shows. He fails miserably to outperform his opponent and freezes then "rabbits" offstage. It seems that this genre of rap is who can come up with the most vulgar and bitter insults of the opponent.

Setting his sights on winning the next battle, Jimmy bides his time and works as a stamping press operator. Trying to save up enough money to move out of his mother's trailer, Jimmy seeks extra shifts. But on one night during a second shift, his second chance to show his skills as a rap artist comes up at the Shelter.

The story is a good story well performed and is a moving and revealing tour in the life of one who is dissatisfied with his life trying to make it better. Genuineness, courage and sincerity were well portrayed as possible even in the bitter, back-stabbing world of the inner city life.

Many health professionals and scientists agree with me and I with God [1 Cor.15:33] that *any* behavioral expression can be shaped by observation of behavior in entertainment, good or bad, whether acted upon or not, whether the behavioral influence manifests the same as the observed behavior or not. Maybe we should be trying use entertainment to move life away from bitterness, nihilism and hate. A very nice thought, but I don't believe modern filmmakers and screenwriters are good enough.

If you can get past the sarcasm about the reality of life in the inner city, and the fact that they think it should be prettied up, it really is a decent review of the crux of the film. The truth they seem not to realize is that life in many places isn't pretty, and being religious/pious/etc isn't going to make a damned bit of difference. The naivete displayed by the authors of the site are contrived. Even children are aware that life isn't all sugar and song. I had a wake up call when talking to my kid about something rather crude we'd overheard in a restaurant. I wanted to know if she understood what was being said, she knew, I was mildly shocked but not floored. Kids aren't stupid, we shouldn't treat them as such. This site intends that children should be kept in a state protected from the real problems of life, outside of closed communities, it's not going to happen.

Gee, looks like this might turn into a social rant. So I'll stop now.

Titanic:
quote:
Wanton Violence/Crime (W) lost all of its starting 100 points due to multiple violent deaths by drowning, falling, crushing, and freezing plus graphical presentation of drownings, abandonment for death, violent entrapment, effective horror of anticipation of eminent death, presentation of drowned bodies, and death by electrocution.

It certainly would have shortened the film had they cut out all that unpleasant drowning and whatnot.

Contrast that with the review of Omega Code:
quote:
There is much gunfire in attempts to murder, four cold-blooded point-blank murders and a killing by supernatural power, and lots of the use of firearms to control and intimidate. Also, while the grabbing by one of the actors of a little girl's chest during an abduction scene was not likely intentional, it might be a good idea to explain to your daughters who see this that it is not okay for people to touch them there

In spite of that, the "critic" gave this fundie claptrap flick a positive review. Clearly, if a movie supports their religious views, it rates highly regardless of whether or not it has any artistic merit.
