...or is nobody talking about sanctions against the U.S. if they (er, that's, "we") invade Iraq without a decent backing from the U.N.?
This just occured to me today, on the drive home from work. A refusal to allow goods to be loaded onto ships headed towards the U.S. would bankrupt lots of retail chains (and perhaps lots of overseas manufacturers), and nobody would have anyone to blame except Bush.
If OPEC were to deny ships who'd docked in the U.S. after a certain event access to more crude, the U.S. would face pretty painful choices.
Or is it the case that the U.S. has too many proverbial fingers in the economic "pies" of other countries that such a plan would even be considered? I mean, I can see how a drastic plummet in the U.S. economy could take out some other countries colaterally, but most of the U.N.?
Just wondering. One reason I don't try to involve myself in a lot of these political discussions is that politics is admittedly not one of my strong points (although I have been thinking about forming the "Critical Thought" party and running for President, but mostly on a theoretical "if I can get elected President without spending a dime on my campaign, those bastards in Congress should quit their collective bitching" platform; first Executive Order would be that campaign time is unpaid, and that members of Congress would need to put in 2080 hours a year - minus a few weeks vacation - like the rest of us schlubs. But I'm just dreaming and know it).

Tbis occurred to me a long time ago. It would take a little of fear, anger or a mix of those because of what the cost to all parties would be but there is a point where profits don't mean much anymore. When and if the USA crosses that line we'll see how frail we really are. But it's obviously more complicated than that. More than a few dictators owe their place of power to the support of the USA and they would follow us to the end. How long do you think Saudi Arabia's current regime would last if the decided on another embargo? Their citizens already distrust and hate them. Make them starve and forget it. And that's only the tip of the iceberg. With multinational corprorations being what they are where does Japanese ownership end and American ownership begin and so on...

To russia. The U.S. is not our (Germany's) most important export-area (only the second-most), so we could actually do an embargo. Inter4esting experiment: What does an embargo do to the embargoing nation if it is in an economical crisis at the time, the embargo starts?
