Hey everyone! My teacher now is going to be teaching astronomy for the very first time next year. She has never tought astronomy before and I'm not sure as to what her knowledge on astronomy is. I did refer her here and to the BA board. But do you think you can help with getting her started and give her some tips. Thanks!

This is actually a bit scary...

Usually one knows their subject before they get a job teaching it.

Too right TD. Governments spend billions on quite silly things and education isn't one of them.

Proper education is important, so our kids will learn from past mistakes and have the confidence to set goals for their future.

It's not the teacher's fault; as usual the decision makers let us down.

Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it's a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.

Our ability to help her depends on her. She will need to tell us how she intends to go about it. Hopefully she know some astronomy, otherwise she in trouble... astronomy is a rather large subject. However, if she has questions, I will try to answer them to the best of my ability.

Megan, besides me, I know of two other people in the neighborhood with scopes. Maybe this summer we can put together our own star party?

Ah, public schools. And incompetent teachers.

I'm glad I was born in a rich family and was spared all that unpleasantness.

Oh? Sounds like you missed the day your school taught manners.

Yeah.
Just because someone hasn't taught a subject before does not automatically mean that person is incompetent. Shame on you.

There are a host of services online for teachers Megan. For astronomy...I would refer your teacher to links like http://teachspacescience.org/cgi-bin/ssrtop.plex or http://amazing-space.stsci.edu/eds/ . If she doesn't find what she needs there then tell her to get online and do a few searches.

I'd like to add I think it's more a a reflection on our federal and state governments than it is on the teacher when teachers and school administrators are asked to do more with less. I also don't think it's out of the norm for a teacher to be asked to teach a class they are not subject matter experts on. That is why they have lesson plans! We're probably not talking about a college professor, but rather someone in the K-12. We should be helping, not mocking the teacher.

Don't spare the teachers. They chose to work for the government. They deserve all the shit we can give them.

My feeling is that they probably feel like they are working for the children, not the government, which is why they work for such low pay. I've never understood why people complain so much about the poor quality of this or that, but never want to invest the time or money to change it.

I would much rather have a highly knowledgable COMPUTER teaching me Astronomy (--or anything else, for that mater--) than a human who knows little or nothing about the subject.

We are, IMO, years overdue for some top-grade educational programs to replace subject-matter-incompetent, short-tempered, and all-too-often autocratic "teachers".
