Maybe I should have done this as a poll, but thinking about it, I decided that polls tend to crimp originality.
So, here's the question: If you had the where-with-all (resources and umitigated gall, and so forth) to do it, what would be your best shot at completely bamboozling another person or organization, or both. I'll go first.
I would like to find, buy, or steal a genuine fossil of, oh, I dunno, say, Ithyostega. Having done this, I'd either knapp a flint point, or better yet, carve one out of another, fossil bone. I'd carefully carve the fossil out to exactly take this point as if the animal had been killed by it. Then super glue it in place. Then, I'd send it to AiG with a long, semi-choerent letter explaining that I was a professional paleontologist and once an atheist, but this incredable and priceless discovery has introduced me (and my fellow conspiritors) to the Truth.
Better yet, deliver the flim-flam in person and beg pitiously to sign up on their Statment of Faith.
Next?
PS: This was inspired by the Allosaure-with-human-remains yank-around of some years ago. If I'm not mistakeb, our good friend Piltdown had a little piece of that one.

Ooooooh! Where to begin?
1. Get an artist friend to practice enhancing pavement with spraypaint to bring out the 'hidden' face of Jebus. Paint it for real in the street blocking the ICR, AiG, etc. driveway. Alert the media.
1.a (For extra credit) Paint Mary blocking a Protestant group's driveway and alert the Catholic media
Hmmmm. Those probably shouldn't count. Too easy to bamboozle the True Believers that way.
2. Find a co-conspirator at Pixar and rework some footage of Carl Sagan or Stephen Jay Gould to have them appear to be making pro-ID or anti-evolution remarks when they thought they were off camera.
2.a (Extra credit) What the heck. Rework the background so that when viewed through a specific color filter you can see the words "April Fool".

Didn't some Creationist already do something like that? Altering real fossils I mean. I seem to remember some of them getting caught trying to carve human toe prints into a set of fossilized dinosaur tracks. It was by a river somewhere in the southeastern US a number of years ago. I'm at work right now so I don't have any resources available for the exact place or date.

You may be thinking of the Paluxy River 'Man Tracks'. The Talk.Origins Archive has extensive articles on the subject. The Creationist most closely linked to the 'man tracks' is "Dr." Carl Baugh. |

Yes indeed, but these were pretty obvious and clumsy frauds. even AiG and ICR no longer use these as 'proof' of anything.
I'm talking about a fraud so skillfully done that they'll fight to the death to promote it, even after I've come clean and 'fessed up through gales of laughter.
Edited to add: The Allosaure hoax is still occasionaly quoted on some of the more hysterical forums. Would that I could've been in on that! |

This reminds me of the Cardiff Giant fiasco. Ever heard of it? It really wasn't that well done, but that didn't seem to matter! The whole episode was hilarious!!!!

Oh yeah. the Cardiff Giant was a classic that I hope wouldn't pass muster in this enlightened day and age.
But, hope in one hand and piss in the other, and see which fills up first. The gullible among us would hail it as (creation?)science in action.
I keep seeing where the glued-together fossil hoax from china is used to refute evolution. What seems to go unnoticed and uncommented upon is that both pieces of the fossil are genuine, just from different species. Therefore, they are still valuable.
I fear for the future of our species.

The Skeptic's Dictionary has an article on this hoax. The "giant" is currently display at The Farmers' Museum in Cooperstown, NY. |

Yes! that's the one I mentioned earlier. What a truely glorious hoax! Pilar Pendeja, indeed! And they fell for it, and are still falling for it.
Many thanks for putting up the link.

Well, this site explains that this was an April Fools joke, and how it was done. But of course, like "crop circles", there are those who will still believe it's real! |
