CAMP BUSHMASTER, Iraq - In this dry desert world near Najaf, where the Army V Corps combat support system sprawls across miles of scabrous dust, there's an oasis of sorts: a 500-gallon pool of pristine, cool water.
It belongs to Army chaplain Josh Llano of Houston, who sees the water shortage, which has kept thousands of filthy soldiers from bathing for weeks, as an opportunity.
''It's simple. They want water. I have it, as long as they agree to get baptized,'' he said.

I really hope this is just more media bullshit, but I fear it might not be. If true, this 'chaplin' should be severly repremanded and relieved of duty.

Edited 'cause Big Dummy forgot to put in the link.

What the hell is going on here......speechles f, speechless...

I do hope it is bullshit.

Just when you think things can't get any stranger! This one is off the scale. I'm curious, just how did this "chaplain" come into "possession" of this oasis? the article didn't say.
I think he should be hoist by his own petard!

I too, am curious as to how ol' chappie got the land title.

Interesting note on a 'petard'. This was an old French version of a hand grenade. As it was of considerably less potency than a nuke, it was virtually called a fart. "Hoist upon his own petard," inspries thought concerning our current government.

I'm going to keep an eye peeled for follow-ups. But I think it'll be buried, as it is an embarressment to all concerned.

As a follow up on the baptising of soldiers...for your information the "Christianising" of Muslims

The new Christian crusades

And, I thought everyone already knew. Killing other people is murder, unless you murder for God.

Maybe, you're right. I don't know the rules. However, I do know that if this a military 'no, no,' then this is just the sort of thing that the administration doesn't want to hear. Kick the ole' Chaplain out, and Dubya and company have themselves a real martyr.

Naw, if it's real, bury the story, and hope the masses don't find out about it. The telecast media won't touch it, unless they can turn it into a peice of feel good fluff that advances their corporate interests. So, there's no worry there.

"We got an issue in America. Too many good docs are gettin' out of business. Too many OB/GYNs aren't able to practice their -- their love with women all across this country." Dubya in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, 9/6/2004

[pedantic @#$% mode]

Actually, the HGoist/petard schtik is from Hamlet:

"For 'tis the sport to have the engineer
Hoist with his own petard: and 't shall go hard
But I will delve one yard below their mines,
And blow them at the moon:"

"engineer" here means a military engineer (the only kind there was in Shakespeare's time) and the image is that of a petard (a small bomb) being hoisted by a crane to be dropped on the other side of an enemy's wall. An engineer who was hoist with his own petard would be cuddling a soon-to-go-off bomb of his own devising.

A petard is a primitive mortar used at very close range for knocking holes in walls. To load one you had to drop an iron ball on the explosive you had already stuffed down the tube. To be "Hoist" by one means to be lifted up into the air by it, which sometimes happened during loading.

Here's another link with a bit of info on the follow-up. It will be interesting to find out if this whole story is even on the level. I have my doubts!
