Please write your state official who is representing you in Congress. I did. Most of them are accessible by email these days making it easy to do so.

HR 153 "Recognizing the public need for fasting and prayer in order to secure the blessings and protection of Providence for the people of the United States and our Armed Forces during the conflict in Iraq and under the threat of terrorism at home. "
If you are in total denial about how this could happen and need to see it for yourself, go to http://thomas.loc.gov and type in H. RES. 153 in the Bill Number query box. The link is disabled after a short period of time so I couldn't list it here.
See whether your Senator or State Rep voted in favor of this moronic bill...chances are they did! Vote Record http://clerkweb.house.gov/cgi-bin/vote.exe?year=2003&rollnumber=90

I hate to disillusion you but every time I've emailed my senator all I get back is a form email saying they get so many that they can't respond individually. They assure me they read them though. What a joke. I once put on the subject line something different then the content. Guess what? The email I got back said they were checking into.....what I put on the subject line, and nothing about my inquiry in the text of the email. I have had some luck with my congressman, I do get actuall replies back in the mail when I go to his office and turn in a writen note. However, the last reply I got only referenced one of my points, about the 'war'. And nothing about the 2nd point in the same letter, asking if he'd ever met P. Bush and is the man mentaly retarded. Guess 50% isn't bad for the government. About your post, I'll call an mention the bill to my representatives. They do say they tally phone calls. |

I certainly sympathize, but my rep. is Billy Tauzin, (pronounced Toe'-zan). He will support this bill to the bitter end. If he doesn't, he may as well quit politics, because he will never again hold an elected seat in this state outside of the city of New Orleans, and he's from down the bayou in Chackbay. You cannot win an election in Louisiana unless you are Catholic or born again.
Billy is an ex-Dixiecrat turned Republican that has run for Representative for the 3rd La. District 12 times, never getting less than 75% of the popular vote. I think he averages about 90% in political contests. He is the Chairman of the Committee of Energy and Commerce, a senior member of the Resources Committee and the Deputy Majority Whip. His pet legislation is the National Sales Tax proposals, and I wouldn't doubt that he's Big Oil's Number One guy in the House.
He's Cajun, born and raised, and the Church stands before the Constitution. There is a higher obligation than country around here.
I'd write to him, but they no longer send me pleas for campaign contributions, nor invite me to the "Billy Bash." I'm quite sure that if I were to write a letter explaining the meaning of the Constitution, it would become the laugh of the day around the offices. |

"Hi! We're the House of Representatives. We are partly responsible for getting the U.S.A. into the war in Iraq, but now we're going to spend taxpayer time passing resolutions like this, which entreat you, the citizens, to pray for guidance for improving yourselves. Look, all these famous people in the past did the same, so we figured we'd better do this, also."
Is that about the gist of it?

The last time I tried that, I wrote to Jeff Miller and Bill Nelson imploring them not to muck with the original Newdow decision. I got letters back from both saying basically that they understood my outrage at having my religious freedom curtailed and they would fight the ruling to the bitter end. Now that's what I call listening to your constituency. |

Thanks to DiMossi for pointing me to this on yahoo...wahahaha -----------------------
Court: Atheist Can Pray at City Meeting Fri Apr 11, 8:13 PM ET Add U.S. National - AP to My Yahoo!
By PATTY HENETZ, Associated Press Writer
SALT LAKE CITY - An atheist who sought to pray in City Council meetings for deliverance "from weak and stupid politicians" got the blessing of the Utah Supreme Court on Friday.
The court ruled that if officials in Murray, Utah, want to pray during government-sponsored events, the opportunity to pray must be equally accessible to all who ask.
The Supreme Court's 4-1 ruling reversed the dismissal of a lawsuit that Tom Snyder, 71, filed in state court in 1999.
"Thanks to the Supreme Court for reaffirming that constitutional protection," Snyder said. "There should be no government preference for one religion over another or a preference for religion over non-religion."
He and his lawyer have been pursuing the lawsuit since 1994, when Snyder filed a lawsuit in federal court against the Salt Lake City suburb for allowing other pre-meeting prayers but refusing to let him offer a prayer addressed to "Our Mother, who art in heaven."
Among other things, the prayer asked for deliverance "from the evil of forced religious worship now sought to be imposed upon the people ... by the actions of misguided, weak and stupid politicians, who abuse power in their own self-righteousness."
Richard Van Wagoner, the attorney who represented the city before the high court, said he and his clients were disappointed. "Murray City has been placed in a constitutional dilemma," he said.
Friday's ruling was based on a 1993 decision that upheld Salt Lake City's right to hear prayers during official events as long as the opportunity to deliver the prayer was nondiscriminatory.
Salt Lake City chose to end public prayer rather than deal with the inevitable problems.
