Hello Everyone...
I've just signed-up because last night some friends asked us around for a BBQ and ended up sitting through a Nikken Product presentation. So, I thought I'll do some searching and amongst others, I found this site.
He had this product ("complete sleep system?" for about $3000 Australian dollars) that he claimed had the following properties:
1. Reduced overnight sweat. 2. Eliminated allergies. 3. Removed toxins from the body (by making the body less acidic).
In order to prove point 3 that he cut a lemon into ten pieces, wrapped five pieces in paper towels and inserted them between the quilt which was partially sealed in its carrying case. He also wrapped the other five pieces with less paper towels (claiming, for the other bundle, that he didn't want to dirty the quilt) and left those on the table and carried on with the presentation. Half an hour later we tasted the lemon and the one from the bag was not as bitter as the other left out. Is it a case of one oxidising less than the other because of lack of air? I believe so.
He also spoke about the therapy of magnets and bioceramics with far infrared technology properties.
To prove this he took a round tray, about two centimetres thick coated in black (teflon?), and put an ice cube on it (I believe that he told us that the tray contained bioceramics sensitive to Near Infrared Radiation). The ice quickly melted.
Isnt' ceramic an insulator and therefore a very poor conductor? Where is the radiation coming from (not the ice I think). Why did the tray go cold.
I believe that the tray was no more than a thick slab of aluminium coated in something black.
Comments PLEASE!, preferably scientifically based.

The tray was probably aluminum, which has a fairly high heat-transfer ability. There are "defrosting trays" all over the place which will do the same thing, and use no magnets or "bioceramics" (whatever they're supposed to be). There was no radiation, per se, and the tray got cold because it gave up its heat into melting the ice.
As for the quilt making the body less acidic, it's also nonsense. The body's pH level is tightly controlled on nearly a second-by-second basis through breathing. If your blood becomes more acidic, you'll breathe more quickly or deeply. If your blood becomes too alkaline, you'll breathe less quickly or deeply. Either way, your blood pH will quickly return to the normal range, if you are healthy. A quilt won't change this.
How or why making the body less acidic would "remove toxins" is also questionable. Whether or not the quilt would make you sweat less or eliminate allergies, I dunno.

Dunno about the lemon trick, but toxins are removed from the body by the kidneys. How does the blanket know to make your blood less acidic but not your stomach fluids, which would mess up your digestive process if made less acidic? Fails the common-sense test right here.
Messing with Body Acidity seems to be a current fad in quackery. Check out Quackwatch at:
http://www.quackwatch.org/
which has a short explanation of digestion and what's acid and alkaline in the body (by an M.D.) at:
http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/DSH/coral2.html
The author ends by saying:
"If you hear someone say that your body is too acidic and you should use their product to make it more alkaline, you would be wise not to believe anything else the person tells you."
Quackwatch also has a few things to say about magnets. I can personally assure you that magnetic therapy is bad for your credit card
The round tray that melted the ice cube sounds like a product that is sold on TV in the U.S. for the purpose of quickly defrosting frozen foods. It's a thick slab of aluminum, painted black. The TV commercials often show ice cubes melting away during the commercial.
I would think that for your $3000 Aus you could get a good mattress that would not be too hot, an air filtration unit to keep your bedroom air free of particles that might cause allergic reactions, and sufficient VB or whatever you favor to keep your kidneys functioning frequently.
Cheers Henry
