I haven't seen it yet, but the description of the show doesn't bode well:
quote: Jul 18 08:00pm Limited Series/Documentary, 120 Mins. "Order From Chaos; Years of Trial", Episode #101W. Rome rises under Caesar Augustus; Caligula grips Rome in fear; Judea's religious and political establishment finds Jesus a threat.
My kids still love me.

I'm not sure I understand what your concern is. I saw it, it treats christianity in a very matter of fact way, spent one 5 minute segment on it. The show was called "The Roman Empire in the First Century", You kind of have to talk about chritanity... The first part titled "Order From Chaos" was about Augustus. The second part "Years of Trial" dealt with Tiberius, Caligula, and the first half of Cladius' rule. They didn't even get to christianity until the second hour, and then, as I said spent about five minutes on it. They didn't even mention miracles or such, mostly dealt about how he tried to aggitate the Judeans against Rome.
Parts Three and Four are on next week. They will no doubt deal more with christianity then, when they talk about Nero, but again, the show is about the Roman Empire in the First Century, NOT christianity, so I imagine christanity will be merely in the back ground again.

Glad to hear my concerns were misplaced. As I said, I only read the write-up for the program--I hadn't seen it (and something came up last night, so I still haven't seen it). I'll try to catch the other installments.

Hi, I am a new member here--it is wonderful to finally find a place where the posters are not total half-wits!That in fact, know what they are talking about. Anyways, I didn't feel like starting a new topic on this. But it would seem to fit in with the whole "proving Christianity" aspect.
Have many of you heard of an ancient Pagan god named Mithras? He was the basis of a popular pagan religion among Roman soldiers about 500-700 years before the supposed time of Jesus.
Anyways, lets see hmmm...he was born of a virgin on the Winter Solstice. He was the Son of God, died and reborn, final judge of men, well you get the point. All of the criterion was pretty much a perfect match for Jesus--as are many earlier myths. Its no great secret that the early Christians superimposed their beliefs on older Pagan beliefs to replace them. But this whole Mithras-Jesus theory was new to me--is it that widely known?
I'm a great fan of archaeology. Most of what I have read seems to totally invalidate all of the major Bible stories. I mean I never really believed some guy built an arc and filled it with animals during some great flood (STIIIINKY!!!)
But I was still suprised to read that there is no evidence, if not outright invalidation of basic Biblicial stock and trade like the Exodus that Moses was supposed to have led.
A great book is: "The Bible Unearthed" by Finkelstein and Silberman. Sigh if I am like the last one to figure this stuff out...feel like I was born yesterday!!!!

I have read and reread this book and I agree 100%. It's incredible how much archaeology is taking place in the region at this time. Many digs look for volunteers to help with the grunt work. Maybe when I retire.
