I saw that the fish was mentioned over in the humor forum, so I thought we might discuss its origin. It was known to Pythagoras as the "vesica piscis" and was sacred long before Jesus is supposed to have shown up. The Christians usurped it as a symbol only because it was already accepted by many to be sacred, and they were trying desperately to attract followers, by whatever means necessary. So they were either stealing symbols or attacking symbols (e.g. the fig tree) specifically for the purpose of seeming legitimate. I guess it eventually paid off, since they are still in business (literally!), while Bacchus et al are barely remembered.
