The hunt of Iraq's illusive "WMD" is on.

Here's a possible alternative.

When I was in 8th grade a small gaggle of bully-types had gathered by the bike rack. I was not much of a fighter so I was dawdeling when Sister Basil, the 8th grade teacher, asked what I was doing. I told her and she then explained to me some truths about bully-types.

"Face them down;--threaten them with bodily harm and they will almost always back down." I did and, Lo!, they did.

Iraq had a very, very powerful army in 1990. We came in and treated it as if they were fish in a barrel.

How, then, was Iraq to defend itself post-1990? Not with an army. Not with an air-force. They had no navy. What to do, then, to disuade the planetary-level bullies (--the U.S. and its allies--) from attacking poor, pitiful Iraq again.

When NATO faced the huge forces of the Warsaw Pact in the '60s and '70s, we allways had the ultimate threat against Soviet bullyism: Nukes. (Or, in modern terms: WMD) It worked (--although it may have just been that the Soviets never, ever had intended to invade western Europe).

What if Iraq just pretended that they had WMD so that no one would invade----unless, of course, the invaders were willing to take massive causalties. For absolutely sure, the U.S. wouldn't invade under those circumstances since the U.S. abhors heavy causalties. Likewise for Great Britain. Ahhhh. What an elegant solution! No cost; little danger; just lots of defence.

But you wouldn't want your bluff called, would you?

Well, actually: Yeah, sure. There were two things. First thing: I went through puberty early and so was the second biggest in the class from grades 5-8. Second thing, while not much for fighting, I do enjoy a defensive fight. It's kind of an American thing, I think.

On the other hand, if you were talking about Iraq rather than me: NO, NO; I wouldn't want anyone calling my bluff----we Americans killed off most of their army in 1990 and the policies of those nice Democrats Clinton and Madaline Albracht are reported (by the U.N.) to have killed off as many as 500,000 Iraqi kids (and old people) by depriving them food and medicine----leading to a shortage of new-soldiers for a war in the 2000s.
