I came across this survey of current attitudes towards the First Amendment, which asks such questions as: Does the press in America have too much freedom? Should people be allowed to protest a war during active combat? Does the phrase "under God" in the pledge violate the First Amendment? Does the phrase "In God We Trust" on our currency violate them First Amendment? Should government be allowed to give money to religious institutions for drug rehab, even if such institutions engage in spreading a religious message?

I find the resultes of this survey to be somewhat discouraging. But maybe there's still hope.

"Almost one-third of those surveyed said that individuals should not be allowed to protest in public against an American war during the period of active combat."

So exactly what are they fighting for? Wasn't it that they were fighting for freedom and liberty all over the world? I wonder if people realize what it would mean to make such changes come true. One can not fight to protect liberties by fighting the liberties. It's a bit worrying that so many people want to erode large parts of the freedom they usually brag about.

It is amazing how many people fear freedom. My guess is that the majority of people who responding freedoms should be curbed feel that their "values" would still be intact. However, freedom doesn't work that way. Either everyone has freedom, or no one has freedom, beyond what connections and threat of force and power can get for you.
