Justice Department Launches Long-Anticipated War on Obscenity

"We're facing more time than the guy that they just arrested that was trying to sell the surface-to-air missile," said Zicari.

"There's nothing wrong with what we do," said Zicari. "[W]e're not drug dealers or murderers, you know. We make movies. That's it."

But for the Bush administration, that's enough.

"Obscenities have always been a priority of the attorney general," said Mary Beth Buchanan, U.S. attorney for western Pennsylvania. "[A]nd he has asked each U.S. attorney to make that our priority as well."

The Justice Department has chosen its target wisely. Zicari's films are difficult to watch — which may make them difficult to defend.

"The funny thing about my business is I don't force it on anybody," said Zicari. "The only people that are going to be forced to watch my movies are the 12 people that sit on that jury."

"This is about a priority for the country. This is something the country wants prosecuted and therefore we're prosecuting it."

The Bush administration says that overall, adult films today are far more offensive than ever before. It places much of the blame with the Clinton administration for, it claims, not making obscenity prosecutions a priority.

I saw that on TV. I don't personaly know Mr. Zicari but I could well have passed him in the market or elsewhere around here, as I also live in the Porn capital of the USA, the glorious San Fernando Valley. Yeay! Just thought I'd add a little colorful info.

My comment would be, Ashcroft is a fucking jerk. Never trust a man who doesn't approve of dancing.
BTW, when I saw that story I decided, here goes another letter to my congressman.

What is WRONG with someone who won't allow others to have fun? Just 'cause they don't like it, sheesh! I mean, don't they have anything better to do like catch murderers and aliens sneaking across the border or people with bombs?
I'm about do to get a jury notice but I don't think I could get on that case. Damn. Even if I don't wear my button that says Porn is fun! (with a big smilley face on it)

Perhaps if those of us who think the resources of the government could be better spent, wrote to the powers that be, at least they'd know there are some out there who think that case is ridiculous and we want them to stop.
If I could afford to I'd go out and buy more porn than I already have just to show them they can't stop us.
Speaking of porn....I have a copy of 'Insatiable' with Marilyn Chambers, a classic....any bids?

I think I made my opinion clear when I made the thread "American Facist" in the Media Issues folder.

He got his nose bloodied with CPPA and COPA. Evidentally, he's going for a clean sweep.

OK. Everybody sing.

This is a tough one for me because some data indicates that movies and such that depict violence against women can trigger real life violence. I do not particularly care if there are depictions of bizzare (in my opinion) sexual behavior, to each his own, but when we get into the arena of violence (rape and murder) against women, I question if that should be protected.

If I knew then what I know now then I would know more now than I know.

I don't particularly like that form of porn either, but I think it's a free speech issue, and should therefore be protected under the constitution. Hell, Larry Flynt took a bullet for free speech, probably (anyone know for sure?) shot by some religious fundy. This guy may very well get shot also.

People get murdered on TV and in the movies many times every single day, I don't see Ashtray crying about it. He's just a prude who thinks he can impress the religious wrong with his showboating fanaticism.

This time it's porn; next time it may well be mini-skirts or halter tops, high heel shoes or nose rings! Or poker players or anything else he decides that he personally doesn't like. The government has absloutely no business trying to legislate marality!

Absolutely correct. And Larry Flynt better watch out because he also likes poker. He's had enough nonsense from the gov. they'd better not go after gamblers.
As for the violence, I realize this is only my story but I'd bet (yes Bet, so arrest me if you want), that there are others with the same feelings. I used to go to the arcade as a kid and play the target shooting, then Space Invaders on video, then the more advanced videos with all the blood and guts popping out. (there was one game my son used to play where the Kung Fu guy would kick this woman, I encouraged him to hit the shit out of her, today he unfortunatly like girls now) There are some people I really hate and wouldn't mind if they died but I'm not going to kill them just because I like those kind of games. It's the same with porn, I hate women too but hell, there are too many of them to go around punching them all out. What are ya gona do?! The movies or the games are not going to make me do something I wouldn't already think. It's the same old argument, people are going to do things anyway so why deprive others for the few?
There are already laws....for assault and murder, etc., so anyone who's unstable enough to commite those crimes they get arrested but you can't project what will be and make everyone pay.

Oh, I meant to also say, for example when I hammer a nail I think of this one particular person I hate and imagine smashing her face but that's a good thing, it's get out my aggression on the nail....poor nail! IRL, I hope to hell I never see that person again I want to stay far away from her....the bitch.
So you see....watching those movies or playing those games is better than the real thing. It helps rather than hurts.

Flynt was shot by an unknown sniper. One man, Joseph P. Franklin, claimed responsibility for the shooting. He claimed he shot Flynt because he didn't like the interracial sex scenes in his mag. It was racism based instead of prudish right wing extremist.

Unreal. Yet another regressive, oppressive move from The Shrub and His Puritan, God-Fearin' Ilk. I laughed when I read they blamed Clinton for the supposed state of sexual debauchery. Yeah...we're a wild bunch here in America. (Sarcasm)

Wasn't it Ashcroft who was so boobie-phobic (can I say boobie?) that he had a statue's torso draped for his news conference background? Ahhhh, art...the ultimate form of subversion.

I love how the right wing is soooooooo concerned that children not see anything remotely sexual, yet they don't care that millions of children live in poverty and don't have enough to EAT--because it's not the government's role to help, right? Their priorities are laughable.

Why the Puritanistic, punitive view of the world (and of sex in particular) has survived in America, I don't know. This world view seems to see adults as children who aren't capable of making sound decisions about their sexuality. I can only guess this is fear-based. However, the need to control the sexual expression of others is sick, IMO.

How many more days till I can vote against The Shrub?
