quote:
Don't confuse slavery with indentured servitude or bondslavery. The slavery in this country was due to racism. Other forms were often due to debt. At the end of the alotted time, your debt was paid and you were considered free. A bondslave was someone who chose, after their period of restitution was resolved, to remain with the family for the rest of their lives. I would agree that some forms of slavery are wrong, but not all. As for the commandment, I think that would fall under treating your neighbor as yourself. A specific commandment was not necessary.
I'm going to readress this issue again (how redundant of me) because I did so poorly in my first attempt. First god in the OT allows for the owning of aliens (non-jews) unto the third and fourth generations. You could beat your slave and if he didn't die in the first two days you had done nothing wrong, if he died after that, oh well, he was your property anyway.
As to the bond men issue. This is also how the jews referred to themselves while enslaved in Egypt. Basically interchangeable meanings here. I'm not going into the etymology of it either. Thats a bit much research for my limited time constraints.
(I was backwards on this issue previously.)
Jim you consistantly use the NT to refute the amoral teachings of the OT. Well, here's a question for you that relates to the NT/OT relationship.
If a decorated fire fighter is also a child molester does his heroism mitigate his debauchery?
This is the conundrum you create by assuming that the NT mitigates the OT. BTW, it doesn't even do that well, particularly since christ admonishes the people to keep his fathers laws. (Which the slavery issue is covered in.)
As for racism - the bible preaches racism and bigotry. Read the book with a critical eye and less awe of the god almighty thing espoused in it.
I really am quite tired of your apologizing for the OT by holding up the NT. Gee, the most cruel thing in the babble - the big THREAT! Eternal damnation - not brought forward by god in the OT - only by christ. Now quit apologizing and either accept the past of your chosen religion or find something different!
He's YOUR god, they're YOUR rules, YOU burn in hell! |
