Before you take me to task yet once again, Dave, by noting that any prospective colonists to the Moon or to Mars will have to be in excellent health, allow me to preempt with:

Am of soldierly mind. When soldier drops a piece of food in the dirt through which much of the company has previously tromped...am thinking of a piece of meat here...the soldier picks it up, rinses it and gobbles it down. Maybe not even rinses it...What's the harm of a little dirt in your food: they sell 'edible dirt' in France. Yet soldiers are some of the healthiest people around; so what's up with this?

While we old folks, doddering around in our quasi-senile late 20's, wash our food and our dishes thoroughly, todlers of the 2-year and less catagory routinely gobble up dropped food; routinely offer a bite of their pop-tart to the dog; try out the dry-food just poured for the cat...exactly the right crunchiness for teething...and suffer no ill effects. What's up with that?

Have any of these aspects of common-sense living been investigated? I think not. TV medicoes continuously harp on washing all food thoroughly; harp on refrigerating everything even though refrigeration is only a couple of centuries old.

Don't disagree that "health" things are important; but believe that our modern health-propaganda makes no common sense in light of real history or, as with soldiers and babies, in light of today's reality.

BTW, am in good health and plan to stay that way.

My long-winded post may have been addressed you (and PruplePanther) directly, but was meant to be read by a much wider audience. Encouraging people to post about the topics they are interested in (or appeared to be interested in, in your case) isn't a policy I would apply selectively.

Sorry. Our posts seemed to have crossed. The Pruple Wheezer posts everywhere and anywhere. He has little discrimination except for food. His posting-tastes are catholic.

"appeared to be interested in"? What's up with that, Dave? Are you suggesting that yo have no real interest in diverting a 100m+ iron-nickel impactor heading into an Iowa cornfield? Or into a Chicago suburb? Or smack-dab into Tamany Hall? Would like to know how you accrued such an impression.

That would be a good thread to start in the Health Folder.

You appeared to be interested in starting Health-related threads. You then stated that you are not interested in doing so, but my long-winded post was written prior to your disavowal of interest. I emphasized the word (with italics) in an attempt to demonstrate that I understand the difference between my impressions and your actual intent.

I am having trouble finding something to be skeptical about in the notion that "any prospective colonists...will have to be in excellent health." Would be glad to start such a thread but where do you suggest the skepticism is?

I understand. But, do not understand your reference to italics. Is there a sticky or something which explains when to use italics and when to use bolding? And, just what special significance is there in italics? Am MystIfied.

I mean no offense by this, Sea, but your absolute literalism in your last post is tiresome (no offense because I did, truly, feel more tired after reading the above).

It is what you preempted an assumed response of mine with which would make a decent health-related thread (your "what's up with" this or that questions providing possibly contentious points into which a skeptic might sink her or his teeth). You're absolutely correct that colonists would need to be healthy. Picking that to reply to instead of what followed the ellipses is what is, in part, tiresome.

And whether or not you choose to emphasize with bold or italics only matters to me in that I've grown used to italics for emphasis when reading books, I use italics, many other people choose italics, and too many bolded words make a post look like the stereotypical apocalytic nightmare web page (from which italics are generally lacking unless accompanied by a bold, 72-point font). If you'd truly like a style guide, however, you'll get nothing from me.

  • Subjects related to impactors of the 100 meter or larger range
  • Astrobiology: the Science previously known as Exobiology.
I eat almost anything; I am nearly indifferent to health subjects. What else, BTW, would you expect of someone willing to become a Martian colonist?

Then y don't u do that? Post about astrobiological aliens. Post about mars. Post about colonizing moon. But stay out of my Food Folder.

Ur "willing to become a martian colonist?" Good. Better sooner than later. Better faster than slower.

U cant even cook a porterhouse steak rite. U DESERVE a long trip to mars eating goo out of tubes.

And now, I've got no idea what I was trying to say. I wrote that sometime around 2:30 in the morning, and I apologize for it, Sea.

No, yo am the one to apologize, Darling Dave. The whole post was a tongue-in-cheek joking that at 2AM must not have sounded not so jokingly.

Your preaching has gotten through to me, though. Yo am a convert to italics for emphasis.

@tomic

I wholeheartedly agree. "Health & Medicine" would be lots better IMO. I see the two, "Health" and "Medicine", as two very distinct things with little in skeptical common. I think that it would be well worth the extra 11 bytes in the forum title.

Is it too late?

(Edited to add the forgotten word "better" to "would be lots IMO.".)

No, no!! Ugh! Patooie!! Would that medicine did fall under the umbrella of "Health" but all too often medicines slide over under the umbrella of "Sickness" or "Ill-health" and, sometimes, even under the umbrella of "Death".

Unless, of course, you want to debate that some [well-respected] medicines don't end up being indicted as killers.

(Now here is a case when it would be really nice to determine "Who knew what and when did they know it?" --- so that some real, live human medicine-executive types could be indicted for certain obvious criminal charges.)

What a nifty thread. Thanks for sending me here, Dave W. It certainly explains some previously-obscure back-biting that went on a few months ago between Prup and Sea Sorbust.

(BTW, 'orbust does tend to take anything and everything over and have things done her way. That's why she and Prup agreed that she could join here only if she constrained herself to certain topics.)

Also: How nice, albeit too late since I already posted about it somewhere else, to find that Woody D. and Snake are one and the same and that the latter does not merit "R.I.P.". All is well. And nice. Happiness reigns. Contentment is at hand. Ahhhhh.

(Edited to add some relativism: "All is well, etc." relative to this thread and Woody D. previous incarnation.} (Relative to the rest of the World, of course, everything continues to suck. )

Do thou amend thy face, and I'll amend my life. --Falstaff

I completely understand the sentiment behind what you're saying, but the point is that if the topic of discussion affects "health" - either positively or negatively - it goes in the "Health" folder. The names of the folders, of course, don't reflect judgement calls on the value of the topics discussed.

And you're quite welcome for the pointer to this thread. If there was back-biting IRL, I knew nothing about it.

There is a some stuff about food that isn't health-related; for example, its cost; or its production methodologies; or its glitzy marketing; or its artificially enhanced taste. You'd have to really stretch things to fit any of these into "Health".

Sorry to mislead you; the 'back-biting' was person-to-person and not on the Web.

Which is why nobody moved your Raped Iraqi Prisoners and Dairy Products thread out of "Conspiracy Theories." It's in the right folder.

Look, if food-related issues start taking up a largish percentage of all threads here (or even just in "General Skepticism"), it would behoove us (the management) to add a food-specific folder. But that hasn't happened, and the people championing such an addition haven't had much to say about food, anyway.

"IRL" stands for "In Real Life," so I wasn't mislead.
