From Too Good to be True,

Fifty years after Piltdown man was exposed as an outrageous fraud, Tim Radford selects his all-time favourite science scams.
Most of these are good reminders, but I'm sure that the author could have found something better to write about than the "Alien Autopsy" nonsense, which, unlike many of the other frauds mentioned, didn't fool most scientists for a second.

Any fan of the X-Files knows who really performed the autopsy... That was one of my favourite X-Files episodes.

Hell, I don't think it fooled most laymen for a second. I thought it was the funniest thing since the Cardiff Giant!

I dunno. I'd be willing to bet that a decent percentage of the Moon landing hoax believers thought the alien autopsy was science at its conspiracy-busting best. At least until Fox ran the second autopsy show, that is.

(It's a real shame that Frakes couldn't find better work - and Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction blows chunks, as well.)
