Found probable proof that liquid water existed on Mars at some time.

On the other hand, I've read that those sedimentary deposits being scrutinized could have been formed by volcanic activity or even piled up by winds. I think it's a little premature to crack brews in celebration, although I hope 'tis true.

I myself, would like to see evidence of varves. I am also reminded that NASA is deeply imbedded in politics -- why else shitcan Hubble just when it's getting good?

From what I've read, Bush wants to let the Hubble die to save money for his colonization of Mars. I think it's mostly a PR scam, one of his attempts to be re-elected. The Daily Dirt, which is a newsletter I read, had a different reasoning as to why the space craft is being prematuraly dumped. **Warning** The Dailydirt has pornographic links that may be offensive to some people.

Less smart people.

Actually, there are several years old pictures from orbiters that suggest that there have been liquid water Mars. But they are large-scale formation... This latest salt deposit is an important piece of the puzzle.
