"Why do you think he put these galaxies so far away that we could not see them without a telescope as powerful as the Hubble."

Considering the sorry state that the world has been in for the last few thousand years it just goes to show you that god believes in that old adage of, “If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.”

If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him - Voltaire

Isn't it more rewarding to wonder about how it all began, rather than just assuming god did it? Such as, string theory, the BB, etc, granulated quantum theory, etc...

Absolutely. The more I learn about the complexity of the environment and the inter-relationships of life on earth, as well as the universe in general the more amazed I am. The simplistic explanations from the bible and other religions concerning life and the universe completely miss the true level of the complexity and grandeur that is obvious in the one picture from the Hubble.

I know that your statement was sort of "tongue in cheek", but it brings up an interesting point. If we think the world is screwed-up, I ask, screwed-up compared to what? Seriously, the world is perfect. It is not at all like it is described in TV, or books, or as we could imagine it, but it is what it is. Human beings have changed the earth immensely over the last few thousand years, but the earth changes all the time. We are natural beings, even though we erroneously tend to think of ourselves as above or apart from nature. I personally, love going to areas that have had a minimal observable impact from human activities. None the less I still understand that the computer I am typing on is just as 'natural' as a tree in the forest. It is clearly made of natural components modified by a naturally occurring biological organism.

Or something like that.....

If I knew then what I know now then I would know more now than I know.

"What is" is not necessarily "what ought to be." The universe is pretty screwed up, compared to what we can imagine a better universe to be like ("perfect" being stagnant and boring).

Take human anatomy, for example. Blind spots, weak knees, weak spines, eating through the same tube we breathe through, being helpless the first months of life... the list of poor "design" examples goes on and on.

The same quote is found in the sci-fi game "Alpha Centauri", the Civilization spif-off.
