Yesterday, there was a story in the Charlotte Observer about the recent increase in church affiliated investment scams.

quote:
Rock Hill minister Johnny "Bill" Cabe was convicted in federal court in an investment scheme, and Gastonia minister Shelton Joel Shirley pleaded guilty last year in the same case

Gastonia and Rock Hill are both towns on the outskirts of Charlotte NC (my stomping ground). Charlotte itself made national news a few years ago as the home of another bible thumping scam artist, Jim Baker.

All of which goes to show that clergy do indeed do more than lay people, they frequently fleece them as well.

Ah, the good old days of the Spring of '87. Still have the VHS of Jim 'n Tammy's interview on Ted Koppel's Nightline program. Weeping mascara and all! Overseen by Anal Roberts and his 600ft tall Jesus. And old swaggerin' Swaggart, prostitutes and holy oil.
Yep, those were the days.

Here's another scam from Arizona.

......from the site:
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20010807/us/religious_fraud_2.html

WASHINGTON (AP) - Forrest Bomar, a retiree with most of his life savings in brokerage accounts, was tired of the market's swings and attracted by the 6.7-percent return offered on investments by the Baptist Foundation of Arizona.

(snip)
Now, the Bomars have lost nearly all of their $236,166 investment in what turned out to be a scam. The foundation declared bankruptcy and was shut down by state regulators, and three foundation officials have pleaded guilty to defrauding investors.

600 million!

OK. You win. The scam I related only netted about 8.5 Million. I guess the Christians could learn a thing or two from the $cientologist about how to run a scam. 600 million. Jesus!

P.S.

I would guess the KVJ Bible simply because more people know it by hart than the complete works of Shakespeare. But I must admit that I am constantly surprized at how many familiar cliches turn out to be quotes from Shakespeare. The man could turn a phrase.
