Part of a speech by Hatem Bazian at UC Berkely. (Where else)
quote: “Are you angry? [Yeah!] Are you angry? [Yeah!] Are you angry? [Yeah!] Well, we've been watching intifada in Palestine, we've been watching an uprising in Iraq, and the question is that what are we doing? How come we don't have an intifada in this country? Because it seem[s] to me, that we are comfortable in where we are, watching CNN, ABC, NBC, Fox, and all these mainstream... giving us a window to the world while the world is being managed from Washington, from New York, from every other place in here in San Francisco: Chevron, Bechtel, [Carlyle?] Group, Halliburton; every one of those lying, cheating, stealing, deceiving individuals are in our country and we're sitting here and watching the world pass by, people being bombed, and it's about time that we have an intifada in this country that change[s] fundamentally the political dynamics in here. And we know every— They're gonna say some Palestinian being too radical — well, you haven't seen radicalism yet!”
Is this free speech to advocate suicide bombers against innocent people in this country? Maybe it is, but I think he warrants being watched.

Perhaps he means 'Intafada' as a political uprising instead of a campaign of terrorism. Like we should rise up against the political establishment. Personally, I'd like to see our political establishment turned over a bit. We need some new ideas, fresh faces, to revitalize our democracy. My guess is this guy is already being watched, btw. If he's not careful, he might get 'detained.' |

Nowhere did he advocate suicide bombers. You are seeing what you want to see. Intifada does not mean suicide bomber no matter how much you might want it to. Try this meaning:
"Intifada" is an Arabic word derived from the root nafada, meaning "to shake".
As a verb intifada means "to be shaken, to wake up". As a noun it means "shudder, awakening, uprising", with the implication of "a shaking off" -- referring to the process of shaking off sleep or shaking off the dust from one's feet.
In the context of 35 years of Israeli military occupation, Intifada represents a 'shaking off' of the chains of occupation.
The word was first coined in 1987, to describe the first Palestinian uprising against Israeli military rule.
This definition is from http://electronicintifada.net/bytopic/faqs/35.shtml
Take it or leave it but I have understood Intifada to mean a lot more than you are taking it for and a knee jerk reaction to want to watch people that cry out for change because they are ignorant of the words meaning is frightening.
Don't just react to a scary word. Learn what it means first.
