I was up extremly late last night, and found myself flipping through channels on TV. I came across a TV ad for a device that can tell you if your phone is tapped. You plug it in to your phone and if a little light turns green, you know that theres nobody else on the line. They have an annoying catch phrase that they say a thousand times, "if the light is green, you know your clean".

But the point of my post, is to say that the pull to the ad, is that you can get away with the affair your having without being caught by your spouse. The woman in the ad says: "I know you can come over tonight, my husbands working late". Then they continue to make many comments about how you can "get away with it" and "not get caught".

Is this as disturbing to everyone else as it is to me. It sickens me to know that we are at a point in our society where there are products that are advertised as ways to get away with your current affair. It's just ridiculous.

Indeed, if we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desire, not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.-- C.S. Lewis

For once C'88, you and I agree. Marriage is a bargain of loyalty. Ads like these are written by scum.

As for a tap dector, I'm all for it. But I wonder if this is not another scam.

It probably is. It's easy to tell if another phone on the same line is off-hook, simply by measuring the DC voltage on the line while the phone you want to use is on-hook. The chances are that that's all the little doodad does.

Of course, anyone even halfway knowledgeable about plain ol' analog phones could rig up a tap that would defeat such a crude detection device without even needing to do any serious thinking.

I have to agree with all previous speakers...

The ad and the device are both only good for a laugh.

The Ad:
Marriage is an institution that should not be taken lightly.
Though I couldn't care less about the religious aspect of it, I still think it is "sacred" as it is a promise between two (or more...) loving persons to stay together for life.

The Device:
ktesibios is correct, with a minimum of knowledge about telephones (and electronics) one could easily produce "counter-measures" to the device.

Given the massive range of telephone line performance, dependent on distance from your local central office, anything which would be both sensitive and sophisticated enough to detect even a crude inductive tap would be priced out of reach of 99% of worried married people. It'd be much cheaper just to buy one of those boxes which shoot high voltages down the line, in the hopes of "frying" any tapping devices which might be connected.
