Further evidence the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate. . .
http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/05/18/dark.energy/index.html
This quote from the article (IMO) illustrates the best quality of science:
quote: In 1929, Edwin Hubble first suggested that the universe was expanding. But Hubble and conventional astronomy for the next 70 years said the expansion was decelerating because of the force of gravity.
In 2001, based on a Hubble Space Telescope observation of a supernova, or exploding star, 10 billion light years away, NASA scientists believed they had evidence to support the theory that the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate.
Seventy years of accepted astronomy - based on deduction - turned on it's head by actual observation. This is the heart and soul of science that I cherish with love and devotion.

Somewhere, on some fundie religious Message Board, there's some dope saying, "You see. They (the evil secularists) are just changing their views to fit the latest thing. They can't just pick a story and stick to it."
And they're meaning every insane word of it. |

Absolutely. Science rules (I bet some people would find that statement nerdy or geeky, if so, I'll gladly be a geek, heh). It's exciting because it's always changing and we never know what we might find next. Another exciting thing is that through this process we call science, we're slowly inching closer and closer to a more accurate view of the universe which we're parts of. Why would I ever want to choose the "secure feeling" that a never-changing worldview might give me, if it will quickly become more and more obsolete? |

Exactly!
That is precisely why religion has so many followers: People need some place to go to find shelter from a constantly changing, frightening world. One upon I time, I belonged to that category of people, who outgrew the bosom of my mom, but still needed a secure place in the world to comfort me. I was a late bloomer, but there are people in the world that never grow enough to be able to cut the symbolical umbilical cord. |
