Seldom in the history of journalism has a news organ attained the loyal, even rabid following, all but world wide, as this one. I too, am a devoted fan.

Clearly, even the Weekly World News has standards, something that would come as a surprise to many of its fans. It even fact-checks, albeit not to verify the existence of Elvis on Mars but to prevent libel suits. The newsroom itself looks and operates just like a "real" newsroom, with the exception of editors hollering things like "Where is that talking-french-fry story?" I sometimes poked into chat rooms inhabited by WWN readers to see what the masses were thinking and found that remarks like, "I'd love to work there! What a sweet gig - do nothing but smoke weed and think up Elvis and alien stories all day" were typical.

For a stint of almost eight months, I was not only churning out international exclusives, I was also a headshrinker's dream; a multiple personality, tri-polar combo of columnists Ed Anger (think rabid conservative commentator Bill O'Reilly on meth), Dotti Primrose (advice shrew Dr Laura on paint thinner) and Serena Sabak ("America's Sexiest Psychic") and, for a brief period of time while Serena was "in a coma" (she may have been psychic, but she didn't foresee her tragic car accident), her twin sister Sonya.

I would love to have had this guys job. One qualification I have is that I do not fire up a bong before writing. Ed Anger suggested, long before that poser Ann Coulter started stealing material from the WWN, that liberals are guilty of treason. In fact, Ol' Ann might have been a WWN creation if it wasn't for that fact that she is real. Life imitating art I guess. She could have even been a page 5 girl. Oh well.

My ex mother in-law believed what she read in the Weekly World News. She'd call and warn us of impending disasters she had read about in the "news." There were stacks of them in her flat.

The beauty of the WWN is that it doesn't announce itself as a parody as does The National Lampoon. It just sits there with the rest of the tabloids looking very much like the company it is keeping. And let me tell you, the WWN is only slightly less encumbered with facts than the Star or the National Inquirer, which makes the WWN a far more honest read...

Thanks for this Filthy!

De nada, my friend. It was my pleasure.

I have occasionally contemplated submitting an article to the noble WWN, but have yet to do it. Don't know if they'll take 'over-the-transom' writings or not, but I'll bet that they get a lot of them. Perhaps a brief query letter first?

One I was thinking of and even had a couple of great photos for was:

LIVING TRILOBITE FOUND! The photos were of a parasitic copeopod called a 'sea louse'.

What fun! They wouldn't even have to pay me! I'd do it for the byline, if I could think up a really good nom de plume.

Hell, I thought the Coulter hefier was WWN staff........
