I think it'd be a great idea to add a Philosophy folder. I am very interested in different philosophies, and feel science can be incorporated into just about any philosophy. I don't feel in place when I think about adding philosophical point, but if there were a specific forum for doing so, I'd feel right at home.

Yo mama's so fat, she's on both sides of the family.

satans_mom, by some arguments, there are too many forum folders on the SFN already. My policy is that if a subject keeps coming up, over and over, in "General Skepticism" (for example), and starts overwhelming other topics, that subject deserves a new folder all for itself.

In other words, if you can drum up a lot of interest in skeptical discussion of primarily philosophical subjects, I'll go ahead and make a new folder for them. Until then, "General Skepticism" is the best place for such threads. And if you simply wish to "wax philosophical," without trying to steer the discussion towards something which couples with our mission statement, then "General Discussion" is the place to do so.

By the way, I'd like to point out that science itself is a philosophy, as in "A set of ideas or beliefs relating to a particular field or activity; an underlying theory" (American Heritage Dictionary). The basic assumptions of science are:

1) that there is an "objective reality," and
2) that we can learn about the "rules" of that reality through careful investigation.

As such, any philosophy which suggests the absence of an objective reality -- such as solipsism -- is antithetical to the scientific philosophy.

Anyway, "the philosophy of science" is, today, an active subject of discussion among scientists and skeptics alike. It's not like the whole thing has been figured out, yet.
