Most people have heard about the myth that the Sun is shrinking at 5 meters per second, but I started wondering how fast the Sun is actually shrinking? Using the numbers at:

http://www.badastronomy.com/bitesize/massloss.html

And the radius of the Sun found on google:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=radius+of+the+sun

With a bit of Calculus, I got that it was decreasing by .0003290227 meters per second (the radius, that is). I was wondering if anyone could check over my math.

Edit: Just realized that I was actually using the stuff I learned in math.. damn. And its not even the first time this summer either, I wanted to find the speed that a cat would hit the ground if I dropped it off the roof of my building, and not knowing the physics equation, I just used a=9.8m/s and anti-derivatives to find it.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

I'm not good at math (but that's ok, I'm married to an engineer who is) so I can't address that part. However, Dr. Plait (AKA The Bad Astronomer) had this to say regarding the amount of "shrinkage" the sun has suffered in the past billion years:

quote:
The total mass converted to energy is a whopping 2 billion kilograms (4.4 billion pounds) every second! But, the Sun has a total of 2 x 1030 kilograms of mass, or a trillion billion times as much as it converts to energy every second. So compared to its entire mass, the Sun isn't losing much that way! Even over the past billion years, it only lost about one one-hundred-thousandth of its total mass! This is such a small amount we can safely ignore it.

Alright, starting to realize I made a lot of errors with that and it seems to be a bit harder than I first thought. I confused mass with volume so I was using the wrong number. Finding that the density of the sun is 1.4g/cm^3, I found that the volume is 1.428*10^30. Now to find the decrease in radius, I would first need the decrease in volume. What I have is the decrease in mass. So...:

d = m / v

dd/dt = dm/dt / dv/dt (taking the derivatives)

But to find how the decrease in volume from the decrease in mass, I would also need to know the decrease in density (dd/dt). So yea, does this look right to anyone else? I'm guessing that the decrease in density is directly related to the decrease in gravitational forces, which is related to the decrease in mass, but this is where I give up. Haha, oh well.

As I understand it the Suns apparent volume is a balance between the energy produced pushing the apparent volume outwards and the force of gravity pulling it back. Eventually as the fuel is expended the apparent volume will increase (a red giant) as the gravitational force (due to mass) reduces.

Yes, I was just thinking about that. If the gravitational force which gives the Sun its density decreases when the mass decreases, then the density decreases which keeps the volume constant. So its not changing at all.

I hardly think that Boyle's Law is applicable on the Sun, since it is not homogenous. There are various layers of matter with different density, pressure and temperature.

correct, the size is determined by the percentage of hydrogen and total mass. That and its not shrinking we need to worry about.

Yea, I got that now. Thanks.

Perhaps you would care to expand on that thought? It runs contrary to what I know about stars.

Indeed. I have vague recollection of the Sun expanding 30% from 4bya until now. It will probably expand ~30% more the next 4 billion years until it burns out it's hydrogen, then it will blow up to a red giant.

I apologise my statement was lame. So heres another...

I was just trying to point out that the size of a star depends on its mass and type of fuel it is burning.
