I find myself becoming a bit apprehensive about this:
Here and there, I've been reading about planned and even sort of planned/unplanned protests in NYC at the last of this month. These groups are passing out agendas and locations of various meetings to be held during the convention. I've also read statments about what is to be done to control them (they say it'll be a lot but omit exactly what).
They are expecting some 200,000 people, perhaps more, and everybody is pissed, one way or the other. I've also heard, word-of-mouth, from a friend in the City, that counter-protests might be on the agenda as well.
I guess my question is: is this a good thing? I mean, it could get truly nasty, involving fatalities, and that would not help anyone's cause, would it?
No one hates the fool, coward, and traitor Bush more than I, but I'd prefer to see a massive but peaceful gathering, which, as the situation is coming together today, ain't happenin'. I think that any sort of riots would damage the Democrats more than the Republicans.
Whadda you think?

Riots are never a good thing.
They have the guy who busted up the WTO Miami riots in NY for this. Expect alot of teargas, rubber bullets, and high pressure hoses to go along with a massive spate of police brutality.
It occurs to me that the confusion of a large riot would be an ideal place for a group of determined terrorists to do some damage. |

Eh, kill 'em all and let God decide. Oh wait... Damnit...
There is really no way to stop a protest (peaceful one) without taking away the 1st Amendment, at least that I can see. Perhaps having laws that are more strict for people who commit crimes during a protest? Anyways, I say let them protest and natural selection will hopefully take care of the violent ones (in a few hundred years).
If the scuttlebutt I'm hearing is somewhere near accurate, natural selection will be busy a lot sooner than a couple of centuries. Attitudes seem to be that they're going there just to piss off The Man. That ain't good. It implies that a lot of them aren't thinking.
Me, I wish them all luck -- if I were in better health and had a little cash, I might go myself. But I still don't feel good about it.
