Scraping the bottom of a pretty, damned shallow barrel!

I'd have put this in Humor but Dave would have just moved it, anyway.

What the?

When you are giving the keynote address at the Republican National Convention, how the hell do you call yourself a Democrat? Its like that guy from www.skeptictimes.com

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

I got a nice laugh from the Skeptic Times.... click the science tab, and select evolution 101.

It's amazing what the truly ignorant will post, and take credit for posting, on the internet.

And I'm not sure hwat the republicans are trying to do by having Zell-out Miller be their keynote speaker... but it is funny.

Ignorance is preferable to error; and he is less remote from the truth who believes nothing, than he who believes what is wrong.

From the Skeptic times:
quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[A Certain Creationist] doesn't have a genuine PhD or didn't pay his taxes, or has an honorary PhD from Berkeley or etc.

This is just funny. Does this have anything to do with science at all? No. If one of the Creationists doesn't have a genuine PhD, then these Evolutionists should eat Creationists up.

Evolutionists are too scared to debate because they are exposed for frauds during debates.
Evolutionists get refuted right and left in debates.
Evolutionists are exposed for knowing very little about science in debates.
Evolutionists have very few sources to back up any of their claims.
Evolutionists are seen by the public as liars in debates.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How do they see the world this way?

Ah, maybe I shouldn't made that connection, forgot that it would probably change the topic, but oh well.

If you look on his evolution page, he said that only 55% of scientists agree with Darwinian Evolution. When I questioned him on this in the forum, he termed it as atheistic evolution, that is, evolution without the help of god. This agrees with sources that I have found, saying 55% of scientists say atheistic evolution, 45% theistic evolution, and 5% disagree with it overall. He also claims that he quoted it from the NY Times, but I can't find it anywhere when I use the search engine on the NY Times' page. I showed him how the figure is misleading, as many people don't know what Darwinian Evolution is, and would interpret this as just plain evolution (with or without the presence of God). He refuses to change it till other people complain.

I know the entire thing is just an Appeal to Popularity of Authoirty, but so is most of his page so I figured I'd attack that statistics on this one.

He seems like a reasonable guy, but by no means what I would call a skeptic. He takes after Verlch making unsupported assertions and when I call him on those assertions (the biggest one so far, evolution is no a science), he says that I have to think for myself.

Not to be nitpicky or nuthin, but....

55% + 45% + 5% = 105%

Somethings amiss here.

Some of the percentages that get thrown around by the media

I mean it's gotten to the point where they just make the numbers up and throw'em out there. After all 93% of all claimed percentages are off by 44%

Damn math screwed me once again. It was 40% for theistic evolution.

Yeah, and everybody knows that 85% of all statistics are wrong anyway :) Those damned Statisticians!

Actually, Maglev, only 12% of the general population knows that 85% of all statistics are wrong.

Not only that but many of the statistics that are correct are misleading at best.

"...things I have neither seen nor experienced nor heard tell of from anybody else; things, what is more, that do not in fact exist and could not ever exist at all. So my readers must not believe a word I say." -Lucian on his book True History

"...They accept such things on faith alone, without any evidence. So if a fraudulent and cunning person who knows how to take advantage of a situation comes among them, he can make himself rich in a short time." -Lucian critical of early Christians c.166 AD From his book, De Morte Peregrini

It all makes no difference, because as we all know, 87.2% of all statistics are made up 'on the spot'.
