Well it appears that the mountain goat may have been here in North America as early as 780,000 years ago vs 70,000, the black-footed ferret 1.5 mil years ago vs 25,000.

A dig at the Porcupine Cave in Mesa Verde CO has been yielding bones in strata consistent with these time frames. Paleontologist Russ Graham is excited about the discoveries. These discoveries may show that several mammals originally evolved here and migrated to Africa instead of the other way round.

Sorry no links, but the Denver Post doesn't have this story on their website which is really sad.

Trish, all kinds of mammals got their start here, horses and rhinoceros' to name only two. This isn't new info at all. Must have been a slow news day in Denver.

Maybe I should make myself more clear then. The black-footed ferret and the mountain goat were believed to have migrated here from Africa. There are others that they are also looking into. They are referring specifically to species that were believed to have migrated from Africa/Eurasia to North America, the new find shows that these specific species may have evolved here. Unfortunately, they don't list any of the others.

My apologies for my unclear statement earlier.

Y'know Trish, that has always been one of my big bugbears about the US. You have some of the finest fossils in the world, and some of the finest palentologists and yet you also still have people and even whole states which want to turn it all upside down! I'm glad there are some indigenous fossils there - I understand T Rex was American too.

Except for the band with Marc Bolan in. He was British.

Apparently fossil finds for these species have all been of fairly recent dates. This cave has been sealed for a long time. Miners found in about 100 years ago and resealed it behind them.
