Just another reason to vote Kerry!

Arguably the main reason to vote Kerry!

True!
If Bush is able to fill the SC with just a few ayatollahs you can kiss your religious freedom goodbye...

A news story stated that 2 - 3 justice's could be replaced in the next 4 years. 2 - 3 Bush appointees... what a horrific thought!!!!

There might be even more. The court is aging. Only Clarence Thomas is under 65.

Rehnquist is 80
Stevens is 84
O'Connor is 74
Scalia is 68
Kenedy is 68
Souter is 65
Ginsburg is 71
Breyer is 68
Thomas is 56

The article is probably referring to the older justices Stevens, O'Connor, and Ginsburg. Although Scalia, Kennedy, and Breyer aren't far behind. It all depends on the health of the justice.

I am wondering what role the court might play in the upcoming election. I further wonder how Rehnquist's illness might affect that role.

None. Rehnquist is a very conservative judge (dissented in both Roe v. Wade rulings). If Bush, God and Goddess forbid, gets in, he'd only be able to replace a conservative with a conservative. If Kerry gets in, he have to get it past the Senate which is still Republican controlled. Although there is a chance for the Democrats to win a majority of the seats in the Senate.
