OK, so definitely skeptic-related. However, the cast and writers of Comedy Central's Daily Show have come out with a hilarious faux-textbook satire of, well, the US.

It really is presented like your old fifth grade civics text, complete with the "this book is the property of" bit on the inside front cover. It has nine chapters, such as
quote:
Chapter 2 The Founding of America. In this chapter you will: See graphic, full-color photos of America's birth; Learn about the Founding Mothers and find out which ones were FMILFs; Not fire until you see the whiles of their eyes; Become increasingly skeptical of the authors' scholarship; Get sick of always hearing about how great Ben Franklin was; Circle every fifth letter until you find the clue that leads you to the treasure
.

Each chapter has a main text filled with the dry and witty humor you often see in the Daily Show's writing. You'll also find text boxes-- just like a real school textbook!-- with blurbs like "Were you Aware? The fact that the Magna Carta was written in 1215 is, by law, the only thing you are required to know about it," or graphics such as a "timeline of democracy" which features the entry, in 1300 BC "God gives Ten Commandments to Israelites, making them His Chosen People and granting them eternal protection under Divine Law. Nothing bad ever happened to the Jews again." Their photo captions are also absulotely hilarious.

I'm not finished with the book, but I really have laughed out loud quite frequently. So for anyone who enjoys the Daily Show, or who is interested in a satirical look at the US, I think you should get this book!

Don't tell me about it!!! I'm getting it for Christmas.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Definitely a must read! We also have the audio tape, which is great when you want to keep people from bothering on the BART. :)

The audio tape? It's not read by Jon Stewart, is it? I just got the book, I'm through about 50 pages, but I think it would be so much better if Jon Stewart was reading it. He just adds this spice which is like none other.

Sorry, missed this. He reads parts, but he's not the main narrator. It's done in sections.

I'm going to have to get that, it is a much safer way to read the book. I have already gotten two paper cuts from it (one on my left ring finger and one on my right index finger).

It actually gives me some hope that this book is doing so well, especially since the Daily Show peeps aren't exactly in the pocket of the current administration. It's a great book, I heartily agree.

That line about nothing bad ever happening to the Jews again reminded me of a Simpsons episode which took a crack at the Bible. Moses asks Lisa what will happen to the Jews once they leave Egypt, and she reads from some prohecy that says they'll have to wander for 40 years. Then he says, "But after that, it's smooth sailing for the Jews, right?" And her eyes quickly read through the rest of the prophecy as she says, "Um... pretty much."
