Poll Question:
[Please note, this poll was suggested by Chippewa - minor edits have been made.]

Here’s a poll – what do you think? (This hasn’t been in the news recently, but it’s likely worth a poll.)

Porter Goss’s purges at the CIA were designed along the following:
The "Yeah, Right" scenario: Eliminate weak analysis. Strengthen intelligence gathering abilities. Stop leaks.

The "Do As I Say" scenario: Redirect the CIA to be ideologically inline with the Bush administration.

The "But Where’s Bin Laden?" scenario: This is "Do as I say" plus: Provide intelligence interpretations that support justification for future wars.

The "Nightmare" scenario: CIA as ideological-political surveillance & enforcement organization.

The "You’re not Quite Right" scenario: Am I missing something? If so, please explain in a post.
Please select below:

Results:
Yeah, Right   [7%] 1 vote
Do As I Say   [36%] 5 votes
But Where's Bin Laden?   [36%] 5 votes
Nightmare   [21%] 3 votes
You're not Quite Right   [0%] 0 votes

I'm of the opinion that the Bush administration had clear objectives before receiving any intelligence to justify the postition (or maybe based on old intelligence) and all but mandated that only intellligence which confirmed their suppositions be presented.

That isn't to say the intelligence wasn't convincing once it had been compiled, but rather that it was convincing because of what was omitted (and in my opinion, produced in a political culture that all but ensured such information would be omittted.)

edited to add: My choice was "Do as I say."

I chose Nightmare because I keep thinking about what Porter Goss said when he was first appointed. I don't remember his exact words but it was along the line that under his watch the CIA would protect the president. I always thought that it was the Secret Service's job to protect the president and that the CIA's job was to gather foreign intelligence to protect the country. Judging from the people who are leaving or being forced out it seems the CIA's new job will be to provide ideological-political support for his foreign policy decisions.
I'm not so certain about the enforcement part only because this would be more along the lines of what the FBI does and I wouldn't be surprised if there is a shake-up there soon as well.
The whole Bush administration has an eerie resemblance to a 1960's TV movie of the week called Shadow on the Land. It's about a president who turns his administration into a fascist regime, creates a national police force ala homeland security, and does away with civil liberties along the lines of the Patriot Act. All this is done in the name of security to thwart terrorism. The only difference is that the war on terrorism in the movie is against domestic terrorism. Unfortunately the movie is not on video because it is very relevant to what is happening now,

I voted "But Where's Bin Laden?"

I don't know who Porter Gross is (I think), but I know the little I've gathered from the international media and the casual CNN watching. The situation, in my humble opinion, fits that option perfectly. The president decided to wage war, now the rest have to shake their buttocks to justify his decision. The failure to provide evidence for Iraq and to actually capture Bin Laden is seen not as a reason to admit error, but a justification to go on and on with the insanity. That's twisted, but that's pretty much how I interpret it.
