Some cool stuff i found while browsing the internet today. I thought i'd dump it into the cre/evo folder because of its potential link to abiogenesis.
That NY times site requires registration though, and the Journal of the International Society for the Study of the Origin of Life might require university access.
Methane in Martian Air Suggests Life Beneath the Surface
quote: Speaking this month at the American Astronomical Society's Division for Planetary Sciences meeting in Louisville, Ky., Dr. Michael Mumma, a senior scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., reported three years of observations had provided strong evidence for methane.
"We are 99 percent confident," Dr. Mumma said. "It surprised all of us, actually. We really are still scrambling to understand what it means."
Growth of Methanogens on a Mars Soil Simulant
quote: A potential habitat for existence of methanogens on Mars might be a geothermal source of hydrogen, possibly due to volcanic or hydrothermal activity, or the reaction of basalt and anaerobic water, carbon dioxide, which is abundant in the martian atmosphere, and of course, subsurface liquid water. We report here that certain methanogens can grow on a Mars soil simulant when supplied with carbon dioxide, molecular hydrogen, and varying amounts of water.
Of course this is still just speculation, but damnit, i wanna see the first Mars-bugs on a petridish ;) That journal seems to have some nice articles, i think i'll browse through a few back-issues when i have the time for it in the upcoming holidays.

Miss Tick sniffed. 'You could say this piece of advice is pricesless', she said. 'Are you listening?' 'Yes' said Tiffany. 'Good now...If you trust in yourself.." 'Yes..?' '..and believe in your dreams...' 'yes?' '...and follow your star..' Miss Tick went on. 'Yes?' 'You'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy. Goodbye.' |

"...things I have neither seen nor experienced nor heard tell of from anybody else; things, what is more, that do not in fact exist and could not ever exist at all. So my readers must not believe a word I say." -Lucian on his book True History
"...They accept such things on faith alone, without any evidence. So if a fraudulent and cunning person who knows how to take advantage of a situation comes among them, he can make himself rich in a short time." -Lucian critical of early Christians c.166 AD From his book, De Morte Peregrini |

It is coming on to being fascinating. I don't know enough about it yet to comment. Looking forward to when I do.
