Such is the most logical. 2004-12-01 Year-month-day from the general to the speciffic, from the most significant value to the least. We to it (almost) everywhere else.
hour:minutes:second:
Metre, centi-metre (though I prefer spelling it "meter")
Feet:inches
I don't understand why it's so hard to do the same with dates.

That's how we store dates here. It's my favorite method. You have to wonder what towering genius decided the datetime/smalldatetime datatype was a good idea. Was this an act of job security since this meant lots of conversion functions and the like?
