Now it came to pass, afterward, that He went through every city and village, preaching and bringing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God

. And the twelve were with Him,

and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities-- Mary called Magdalene, out of whom had come seven demons,

and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others who provided for Him from their substance.

Luke 8:13

How shall we define "Substance?"

Any comments?

I was just doing some research and came across this verse and I thought it to be very intersting. Of course gathered her with my friends we were able to get a real good laugh.

Strange. I looked at two different translations-- my RSV Luke 8:13 has nothing to do with 'substance', nor does my Gospel Parallels, based on the NRSV. Indeed, what I have for Luke 8:13 is
quote:
The ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe only for awhile and in a time of testing fall away.

Unfortunately, I don't read Greek, so I can't comment. However, something's obviously wrong. Perhaps there's bee a typo?

It's Luke 8:3, not 8:13. And the NIV translates it thusly:
Joanna the wife of Cuza, the manager of Herod's household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.
I still don't get the joke. Does it have something to do with breastfeeding, or sex?

Well, it depends what "their own means" uh, means. My guess is the obvious "financial support" for food and lodging. Of course, it could have meant that they were whoring themselves, or something else. Again, we'd need a Greek expert to come tell us how best to read the passage in question.

Also, I think it's cool if your name is Cuza.

But not if it's Chuza (that spelling, it seems, appears only in the KJV)?

No so cool if it's a cuss word (as it is in portuguese)...
