An interesting opinion piece appeared in today's Sunday Telegraph. It concerns the story of Jesus' birth as told in Matthew-- the more popular of the two main narratives (the other being Luke's). The author-- Geza Vermes (I'm unfamiliar with him, but the blurb at the end of the piece say he's "the author of The Authentic Gospel of Jesus")-- argues that many of the elements related in the story are likely not based on fact, but rather the repackaging of popular motifs already known in the first century as part of the Jesus legend.
Skeptics and other non-Christians may already have some familiarity with these ideas, but I thought I'd pass this on for those unfamiliar and interested in a well-written and concise presentation of the evidence. Unfortunately, because it's a newspaper piece there are no footnotes. I'd wager, however, that some library research or Googling will point you in the right direction for further inquirey.
